With the knowledge that Mississippi has some of the highest rates of death among females in the United States as a result of health issues which include heart disease, breast cancer, and stroke, and that Mississippi women have high rates of health risk factors that include high blood pressure, obesity, and physical inactivity, Pearl River Community College (PRCC) hosts the annual Women’s Health Symposium on the last Saturday in January. With these and other health issues in mind, the Women’s Health Symposium is planned to address many of the health needs of the women in this area of the State.
One of the primary goals of the Symposium is to raise the awareness of the women in this region regarding the need for changes in lifestyles in order to improve the personal health and fitness of our citizens. Screenings for various health concerns, including cholesterol, osteoporosis, blood pressure, etc., are available, and a number of health care professionals and other leaders provide information throughout the event. The topics planned for discussion are related to general health issues (and, in particular, women’s health issues) and other topics of importance to the well being of women. Opportunities are provided for women to interact with a number of health care professionals who provide assistance and information regarding the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of women. Two important results of this symposium will be that women in this area of the State will be better educated regarding their health and will have information which will be helpful in their making positive decisions which will improve not only their lives but also the lives of others around them. Since the Women’s Health Symposium began in 2007, the Grand Sponsor for the Symposium has been the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation.
