Poplarville Shows Up for PRCC Food Drive

The people of Poplarville showed up in force at Ramey’s Marketplace, Friday, August 16, for the food drive benefitting Pearl River Community College’s food pantry, The Market.

The college’s Faculty and Staff Association organized the event along with Ramey’s Marketplace of Poplarville. The faculty and staff organization made collecting donations for The Market one of its first priorities after starting off the year under the direction of the new association president, Lonnie Burchell.

“We want to the thank Ramey’s and all of its employees, our faculty, staff, the college, and the community members for making this event such a wonderful success,” said Burchell.

In addition to the food that was donated they collected over $100 in monetary donations for future food purchases throughout the year. The Market has served over 600 students facing food insecurity to date.

The PRCC organization also has taken on the task of collecting, storing, and distributing dorm necessities to students that lack items like sheets, pillows, soap etc.

“What a great example of The Wildcat Way the PRCC faculty and staff are showing today by hosting a food drive for The Market, our pantry on campus,” said Carol Williams, PRCC Market coordinator. “The food collected here today will benefit the commuters, dorms students, and staff dealing with food insecurity. What a great way to start off the school year!”

Pride, Respect, Class, and Character make up The Wildcat Way Williams is referring to. It has become a way of life for those at Pearl River and the concept meshes well with the giving nature of the community that surrounds it.

“People in Poplarville come together when things need to be done,” said one PRCC employee present at the event.

That “get it done” attitude was more than apparent when looking at the back of the truck holding the abundance of donations made that day.

“They are part of our community, so we take care of them,” commented one shopper making her donations.

Carol Williams also mentioned there are more ways to donate than running to the store. Monetary donations are also accepted by visiting www.prcc.edu/alumni/donate and choosing ‘Wildcat Career Closet and The Market’ as the recipient.

The River continues to be appreciative of the outpouring of support the community has shown PRCC students. Together, The River is Rising.
