All Locations – Pearl River Community College is proud to spotlight alumni as they move on in their professional and academic careers. Lane Ramshur is in her last semester of The University of Mississippi’s pharmacy school and has a wealth of knowledge to share with current PRCC students.

Ramshur originally decided to attend PRCC because it was a cost effective option that was close to home. She received a full ride to PRCC through various scholarships. During her time at PRCC she was involved in extracurriculars on top of her rigorous course load. Ramshur was a part of PRCC’s second honors college class, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honors society, and an Admissions workstudy. When Ramshur started at PRCC she knew she wanted to do something in the medical field. As she began her physics and chemistry courses she approached her instructors Dr. Glenn Dale, Instructor of Chemistry, and Dr. Henry Setze, Instructor of Physics and Mathematics, and expressed that she may not want to continue to pursue a career in the field. She had a sense of being overwhelmed and unprepared; however, both instructors encouraged her to continue and dedicated time to helping her. She would visit them in-between and after classes to get clarification on course materials and assignments. Ramshur successfully completed 2 years of prerequisite coursework at PRCC. She attributes much of her success to the support she received from the staff and faculty at PRCC. Ramshur says the foundation she was able to build at PRCC allowed for her enjoy an easier transition into her university program.

Ramshur is currently a part of the pharmacy honors society and received several awards at Ole Miss including 4 course specific awards and the Taylor Medal, the highest academic award at the university, during her undergrad. She will be finishing her pharmaceutical degree in May 2019.

When asked about what advice she would give to students interested in academic paths such as hers, she encouraged these students to not get discouraged when things get tough. “Don’t be afraid to reach out to your instructors for help if something from the course isn’t clear,” said Ramshur. “Developing those communication skills with instructors can lead to more opportunities and a better transfer process in the long run.” She also stressed the importance of taking the whole process one day at a time as to not get overwhelmed with what steps lay ahead of you. After having such great support from instructors at PRCC, Ramshur understands the importance of mentorship. Not only does she seen mentorship for herself, she has taken on the task of mentoring some PRCC students interested in the pharmacy program herself and plans to continue that mentorship as she further pursues her career path.

PRCC is proud of Lane and her accomplishments and looks forward to what goals she continues to reach in the future.
