PRCC students wow audience with production of cult classic, Little Shop of Horrors

April 15, 2026

Community members and Pearl River Community College students gravitated to The Brownstone Center for the Arts this past weekend for the college’s annual theatrical production. This year, students performed “Little Shop of Horrors,” a musical that blends comedy, horror, and 1960s-style music.

The stage was set to transport the audience to Skid Row, an urban neighborhood with a flower shop owned by a cranky Mr. Mushnik, where Audrey and Seymour worked for him.

Two actors portraying Seymour and Mr. Mushnik stand center stage singing with arms outstretched in a colorful flower shop set. The large Audrey II plant puppet is visible behind them near a window.

Audrey is in a relationship with Orin, a sadistic dentist who is controlling.

Actor portraying Orin the dentist leans toward Seymour, who is strapped into a barber-style chair. The scene features a dramatic backdrop splattered with red, emphasizing the intense and comedic tone of the moment.

A trio of street narrators helps to frame the story.

Three performers portraying the street narrators pose confidently with synchronized arm movements, smiling under stage lights. A painted storefront backdrop is visible behind them.

Seymour finds an unusual plant, which he names Audrey II, after the coworker he loves.  The plant doesn’t thrive like others; it demands blood to survive.

Seymour stands behind a shop counter holding up a small Audrey II plant, smiling and pointing upward under warm stage lighting. The set includes a simple shop interior with a door and wall decor.

As the plant grows, so does the success of the flower shop and Seymour.

Actor portraying Audrey kneels on stage in a pink satin robe while Seymour kneels in front of her holding her hands. Behind them, the large Audrey II plant puppet looms with its mouth open under dramatic purple and red stage lighting.

Only, the plant begins to demand more from Seymour, taking him into morally dark places to feed its unquenchable thirst. The question remains: how far will Seymour go to keep his newfound social standing?

Under intense red lighting, Seymour leans forward feeding Audrey II, whose large open mouth dominates the scene. A bucket and table of flowers sit nearby, adding to the dramatic atmosphere.

While the story captivated audiences, it was the students’ dedication and talent that truly brought the production to life. Pearl River’s student performers devote countless hours both in and out of the classroom preparing for productions like this, balancing rehearsals, coursework, and collaboration to create a fully immersive experience for every audience member.

Housed within the Brownstone Center for the Arts, the college’s fine arts programs provide a professional-caliber environment where creativity thrives. More than just a performance venue, the Brownstone serves as a space where students refine their craft, build confidence, and form meaningful connections that extend far beyond the stage. For many, it becomes the place where they discover their niche, where passion meets purpose and moments turn into lasting memories.

Full cast of Little Shop of Horrors stands across the stage holding hands and bowing together. The flower shop set and Audrey II plant are visible in the background.

Several members of the Student Activities Board attended Friday night’s production together, including Allen Pearce of Purvis. They all enjoyed the evening out and were in awe of overall production.

“The play was great,” said Pearce. “The way the characters were in such good sync with each other was amazing. And they made the audience stay engaged.”

Poplarville resident Judy Myrick attended the production with friends.

“I have been seriously impressed with the performance tonight,” said Myrick. “The students are fantastic. Every performance I come here to see leaves me blown away time and time again.”
