POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College’s third year of Wildcat Way to Adventure camps for kids got a boost with a grant from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation.
The foundation helped sponsor camps for students in kindergarten through ninth grade along with fees for five underprivileged children. Sixteen camps were held on the Poplarville campus and two were at the Forrest County Center.
“With the support of the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation, we are pleased to expand our camp offerings again this year,” said Melanie Davis, PRCC director of professional and community development. “We have increased science and STEM opportunities with forensics, marine biology and engineering options. Other extensions include music, first aid and cooking options.
“We are grateful for the continued support of the foundation, and we hope to engage and challenge the minds of many young learners this summer.”
Places in most of the camps filled within three days of the opening of registration, she said.
“Summer camps are a great way to bridge the gap between the end of one school year and the beginning of another,” said Clyde Dease, president of the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation. “This program will provide a mechanism by which children may review and implement many of the academic concepts they learned during the school year, all while having fun. The foundation is happy to support PRCC in this endeavor.”
A few openings remain in the Environmental Adventures camp for students completing sixth-eighth grades. It will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at the Forrest County Center in Hattiesburg. Cost is $20. Online registration can be found at www.prcc.edu/kidscollege.
