PRCC elects Whitney Waits as homecoming queen

POPLARVILLE – A sophomore from Hattiesburg will reign as Pearl River Community College Homecoming Queen during festivities on Saturday, Oct. 13, in Poplarville.
The PRCC student body elected 19-year-old Whitney Waits as queen.

Her 2012 court includes sophomore maids Stevany Nicole Jackson and Presley Stiglets, both of Hattiesburg; freshman maids Victoria Farmer of Picayune, ZyQuona McGill of Hattiesburg and Taylor Layne Smith of Pearl; Forrest County Center sophomore maid Laykin Cierra Posey of Hattiesburg, Forrest County Center freshman maid Whitney Ware of Petal and Hancock Center maid Ashley Chasez of Waveland.
The court will be presented to the student body at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, during Fall Fest on the Poplarville campus. The young women and their mothers or other guests will be honored at a luncheon following Fall Fest.

Homecoming activities on Saturday, Oct. 13, begin at 9 a.m. in the Technology Center with the induction of the 2012 class into the PRCC Sports Hall of Fame. The Alumni House will be open at 10 a.m. for reunions of the Classes of 1934-52. The 50th Reunion Class of 1962 and alumni of all years of the Spirit of the River marching band will have reunions at 10 a.m. in the Technology Center. Former associate degree nursing students will meet in the Nursing Building.

The Alumni Luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. in Olivia Bender Cafeteria in Crosby Hall. Advance tickets are $20 through Oct. 5 and $25 after that date.
The homecoming court will be presented and Waits crowned during pre-game ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. at Dobie Holden Stadium where the PRCC Wildcats will play the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m.

Waits, the daughter of Renee and Billy Waits of Hattiesburg, is vice president of the PRCC Fellowship of Christian Athletes and plays on the Lady Wildcat softball team. She also played softball, basketball and volleyball at Oak Grove High School. A general studies major, she plans to attend the University of Mississippi Medical Center to study radiological science.

A 19-year-old chemistry major, Jackson is the daughter of Louise Jackson and Stevenson Jackson, both of Hattiesburg. She is vice president of the PRCC sophomore class, secretary of the Iota Mu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, a dancer with the String of Pearls and a student trainer. At North Forrest High School, she participated in dance, cheerleading and gymnastics, was a member of the annual staff, Health Occupations Students of America and Archonettes, the student auxiliary of Zeta Phi Beta sorority. She plans to earn a chemistry degree at Mississippi State University before attending medical school to become a sports medicine physician or a neonatologist.

Stiglets, 19, is the daughter of Stacey and Tracy Stiglets of Hattiesburg and the late Gidget Necaise. She is executive president of the PRCC Student Government Association, Miss PRCC Wildcat 2012-13 and a member of the Lady Wildcat soccer team and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team. At Oak Grove High School, she played soccer and was Student Body reporter and BETA Club reporter. She plans to continue playing soccer while completing her education.

The daughter of Kevin and Ruth Farmer of Picayune, Farmer dances with the String of Pearls and is a nutrition major. At Picayune Memorial High School, she was DECA vice president, a member of FBLA, Student Council and the dance team and was involved in theater. Farmer, 18, was also a teacher at Leisha’s Dance School and fitness trainer at the Cornerstone Fitness Center. She plans to transfer to the University of Southern Mississippi and continue studying dance.

McGill is the 18-year-old daughter of Kittie Clayton of Columbia. A piano and voice major, she plays clarinet in the Spirit of the River marching band and sings in the PRCC Singers choir. At Oak Grove High School, she participated in band, handbells, Connection and Highlights showchoirs, chamber choir and Fiesta Latina and was a member of One Heart One Mind, Spanish Club and the television broadcast crew. She plans to attend the Julliard School to study piano and voice and join an orchestra.

The daughter of Curtis and Laura Smith of Pearl, Smith is 18 and plays on the Lady Wildcat soccer team. At Pearl High School, she was Most Beautiful 2011, a starter on the soccer team, a varsity cheerleader and a member of the PHS Student Council and Pearl Mayor’s Youth Council. A kinesiology major, she plans to become a physical therapist.

Posey, 19, is the daughter of Ruby Posey, a PRCC alumnus, and Larry Posey, who is currently serving in Afghanistan. A dental assisting major, she is a Dean’s List student and holds down a work-study job at the Forrest County Center. At North Forrest High School, she was Spanish Club president, HOSA historian, a cheerleader and a member of the annual staff, soccer team, DECA and the National Honor Society for High School Students. She plans to work as a dental assistant while studying to become a dental hygienist.

The 18-year-old daughter of Omar and Laketta Ware of Petal, Ware graduated from the Mississippi School of the Arts where she was involved in theater, dance, vocal and literary groups. She plans to study film at the University of New Orleans.

Chasez, 18, is the daughter of Kelly Powell and Frederick Chasez Jr., both of Waveland. She is a general studies major and serves on the Hancock Center Student Government Association. At Bay High School, she was a member of the Bay High Steppers, the yearbook staff, Students Against Drunk Driving, National Honors Society and the Interact Club. She plans to continue her education at the University of Mississippi. Her sister, Austa Chasez, also attended the PRCC Hancock Center and was a member of the 2010 and 2011 homecoming courts.

Each community college president is asked to bring two (2) wrapped door prizes, minimum value of $50 each. We will have a station set up at the conference for you to drop off the door prizes.

Each community college is asked to provide name tags for their Board members, administration, and staff attending the conference.
