Pearl River Instructor Honored Among ‘100 Successful Women to Know’ for Gulf Coast

June 25, 2025

Longtime Pearl River Community College instructor Melinda Miller is a familiar face in the Poplarville Campus science building, where she has taught biology, human anatomy and physiology, and forensics to thousands of students since she joined the faculty in 1999. Earlier this month, her dedication to community and students was recognized by Gulf Coast Woman Magazine at the 100 Successful Women to Know Luncheon held at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi.

Nominations for the award were accepted from community members in April. A panel of judges selected the 100 women from 820 nominations for 2025. Miller said she found the recognition to be both an incredible honor and a deeply humbling experience.

“As an educator and advocate for community service, this recognition affirms the value of investing in both minds and hearts; whether in the classroom, mentoring students, or partnering with local organizations to make lasting change in your community,” said Miller.

“Education is more than a profession; it’s a lifelong calling to ignite curiosity, cultivate confidence, and open doors of opportunity. Through years of teaching and service, I have been fortunate to witness how knowledge and compassion together can transform lives. This award inspires me to continue fostering educational opportunities, expanding outreach, and empowering others.”

Miller began her academic career at Mississippi State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and General Science Education. After graduation, she spent several years teaching at Hancock High School. She continued her education by earning a Master of Science in Science Education from the University of Southern Mississippi, followed by a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Forensic DNA & Serology) and Graduate Certification in Forensic Death Investigation from the University of Florida.

Miller co-sponsors the STEM Club and manages the Mississippi Space Grant Consortium activities on campus. Off campus, she is an associate member in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and an executive board member of the Mississippi Science Teaching Association (MSTA). In 2020, she was recognized as the MSTA Distinguished Science Educator. With Catalyst Learning on the Gulf Coast and in surrounding counties, Miller provides educational STEM and professional development opportunities.

“Melinda Miller exemplifies the spirit of STEM education—combining deep scientific knowledge with a heartfelt commitment to community,” said Science, Mathematics, and Business Department Chair and Instructor of Biology Amanda Lawler. “As a biology instructor, STEM Club advisor, and coordinator for the Mississippi Space Grant Consortium, she empowers students at Pearl River Community College to reach beyond the classroom and into the future.”

Beyond the classroom, Miller is passionate about giving back to the community. She is an active member of the Junior Auxiliary of Hancock County, serving as educational chair and hours chair.

“I believe in leading by example and demonstrating curiosity, integrity, resilience, and compassion,” said Miller. “My hope is to instill those values in every student I teach.

“Ultimately, my career has been about more than teaching biology; it has been about shaping futures, opening doors, and creating a ripple effect of positive change through education and service.”

Miller and the 99 other women recognized will be in the July issue of Gulf Coast Woman.

About 100 Successful Women to Know

Many talented, accomplished women on the Mississippi Gulf Coast don’t seek recognition for themselves, but Gulf Coast Woman magazine ensures they shine brightly with the “100 Successful Women to Know” campaign. This annual initiative celebrates influential and impactful South Mississippi female leaders, who represent areas ranging from nonprofits and the arts to education and entrepreneurship. Extra consideration is given to nominees who are deserving, but may not have received top honors.
