As a single mother, Thomasina Barnes of Jefferson Davis County knew early on that in order to create a stable environment for her and her child that she had some obstacles to overcome.
Pearl River Community College became a significant part of that journey.
“I have found that it was a time for exploration and growth,” said Barnes. “I have had the opportunity to discover new interests, build important skills, and make lifelong friendships. PRCC has been a place where you develop independence, learn to manage your time, and prepare for future academic or career paths.”
Barnes, 23, graduated from Jefferson Davis County High in 2019. She then went to PRCC and obtained her Associate of Arts degree in May 2022. The healthcare journey at PRCC began from that point.

In July 2022, she was certified as a Nursing Assistant. In September 2022, she became certified as an EKG Technician. In November 2022, she became a certified Phlebotomist. In December 2022, she became a certified Medical Assistant.
“I am currently in the PN (Practical Nursing) program at PRCC,” said Barnes. “I plan to further my education and become a registered nurse.”
Her PRCC instructors along the way could tell early on that Barnes was focused on her goals.
“She was determined to reach and exceed her goals,” said Adison King, PRCC Nursing Assistant instructor. “She has kept in touch over the years, and I am so proud to continue to see her grow and learn and accomplish so much. She is a wonderful caregiver, healthcare worker, and friend.”
Marissa Brandon, PRCC Certified Clinical Medical Assistant instructor, agrees with King.
“(Thomasina) demonstrated remarkable commitment by going to work after class every day while maintaining a high academic average and excelling in her skills,” said Brandon. “Her friendly demeanor contributed to a positive atmosphere among her classmates. I was proud to learn that she is continuing her education journey at PRCC in nursing.”
Barnes is the mother of Aiden Barnes, a Kindergarten student with lots of energy. “As a single mother, one of the greatest accomplishments have been fostering a nurturing environment where my child feels loved and supported,” she said.
“This includes balancing work and family, creating a stable home, and instilling values like resilience and independence. Achieving milestones with my child, whether it’s his or my academic success, personal growth, or simply watching both of us thrive, has been incredibly rewarding.”
Barnes’ child and her goals motivate her.
“My experience at PRCC has truly been amazing,” she said. “Throughout my journey, I have had sometimes where things have gotten rough. As those trying times came, I always knew what and who to depend on. My faith was instilled in me at an early age, and I always go back to what was given to me and that is the strength to continue to move forward.”
