This highly competitive scholarship is awarded to the nation’s top community college students seeking to complete their bachelor’s degrees at four-year colleges or universities. Applicants must provide evidence of exceptional academic achievement, completion of challenging coursework, plus intellectual curiosity, creativity, and passion for learning. Students must also demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to community service, all while providing details about overcoming challenges and demonstrating resilience.

The award covers a significant portion of their educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees. Awardees can receive up to $55,000 per year for two to three years at a four-year accredited undergraduate school for any area of study. A financial need requirement must be met to be considered for the scholarship.

This year, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation received more than 1,600 applications for the scholarship and named 459 as semifinalists

Makayla Herberger

Herberger, a nursing major at Pearl River Community College, has distinguished herself through both academic excellence and campus leadership. Currently, she serves as President of Phi Theta Kappa, Secretary for the History and Humanities Club, and Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta. Herberger expressed deep appreciation for being named a Jack Kent Cooke Semifinalist. “I am grateful for this recognition,” she said. “It feels truly inspiring to be surrounded by such a dedicated and passionate group of individuals who are committed to academic excellence, leadership, and community service.”

Herberger has set her sights on becoming a nurse practitioner, with plans to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and eventually serve as a nurse educator. She credits her time at PRCC for helping her grow both personally and professionally.

“Pearl River has provided me with incredible relationships and many opportunities for growth,” Herberger said.

In addition to her selection as a semifinalist, Herberger was awarded the $5,000 Guistwhite Scholarship, which recognizes Phi Theta Kappa members for leadership, engagement, and academic excellence as they work toward a bachelor’s degree.

Naomi Williamson

Williamson, a pre-law and legal studies major at Pearl River Community College, plans to attend the University of Mississippi to earn a Bachelor of Science in Law Studies, followed by a Juris Doctorate. Her career goal is to become a criminal prosecuting attorney.

On the Poplarville Campus, she holds leadership roles as President of the Iota Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and Sophomore Representative of the Dr. William Lewis Honors Institute. She is also an active member of Sigma Kappa Delta. Homeschooled during high school, Williamson credits PRCC with being a pivotal part of her academic and personal growth.

Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “Overcoming severe anxiety, I went from being afraid to speak in class to leading discussions, winning scholarships and awards, and serving as chapter president for PTK and sophomore representative for our Honors Institute. These are achievements I truly never imagined possible without the unwavering support of my instructors and advisors at The River.

“PRCC not only exemplifies pride, respect, class, and character; it also ensures that every student is prepared to succeed beyond graduation. The sense of community here is truly special, and I couldn’t be more grateful for my time at PRCC.”

Williamson was “utterly shocked” to learn she had been selected as a Jack Kent Cooke semifinalist. “I immediately told my fiancée, mom, and anyone else who would listen. It’s hard to believe I almost didn’t apply, convinced it wasn’t possible for me.

“This experience has shown me just how important it is never to doubt yourself and always to chase your dreams, no matter how out of reach they may seem.”
