Empowering Single-Parent Families: PRCC Announces New Scholarship Funded by Ford Foundation

August 22, 2024

Empowering futures starts with education. The Pearl River Community College Development Foundation is thrilled to introduce the Build Better Scholarship, made possible by a $5,000 contribution from the Ford Foundation. This scholarship, specifically designed to support single parents or children of single parents, will be awarded to a deserving student this fall.

The check is made out to the Pearl River Community College Foundation for $5,000, dated August 13, 2024, and designated for student scholarships from The Ford Foundation. The group includes three women dressed in casual professional attire, one man in a gray polo shirt, and another woman in a red blazer. “The PRCC Foundation is excited to work with the Ford Foundation through scholarship support,” said Executive Director of Development Foundation/Alumni Association Delana Harris. “The Ford Foundation has chosen to provide a scholarship to a single parent or a child of a single-parent home pursuing a degree at PRCC.

“This is a wonderful and very worthy group to assist. Many of our students who enroll at PRCC are looking for a second chance and a new opportunity to improve their lives and the lives of their children. The PRCC Foundation is proud to be a part of that process, and we look forward to working with the Ford Foundation for years to come.”

Pearl River Community College’s mission is to provide quality educational and service opportunities for all who seek them. Ultimately, The River seeks to be a launching pad for transformations that lead to better citizens who can create better communities. This goal is met by equipping PRCC graduates with the knowledge and skills to launch their careers while meeting the needs of the local workforce.

The Ford Foundation in Hattiesburg was founded in 2023 with the primary mission of assisting single-parent families.

“Every scholarship awarded is a step towards breaking the cycle of hardship for single-parent families,” said Executive Director Lauren Firth. “The Build Better Scholarship program is our commitment to supporting their journey to a brighter, more empowered future.”

Pearl River administration has worked diligently to keep the cost of attendance affordable. Yet, for some students, the price is still a roadblock on earning a certificate or associate degree. Scholarships can help cover those costs, making it possible for more individuals to secure the education needed to open more doors of opportunity.

“Through the Build Better Scholarship program, we’re opening doors to education and opportunities for single mothers and children raised in single-parent homes,” said CEO/Founder Billy Ford. “This initiative is about giving them the tools they need to succeed and thrive, despite the challenges they face.”

The PRCC Foundation will award the scholarship this fall. The total amount awarded will depend on a student’s need, up to full tuition and fee coverage. This opportunity allows single parents to enroll in college and achieve their educational goals without the burden of finances.
