FlexFactor Touchdowns and Technology Camp at PRCC

October 1, 2024

This fall break, students at the PRCC Woodall Center took a deep dive into the world of football, but with a STEM twist! Our FlexFactor Touchdowns and Technology Camp gave students hands-on experience with the cutting-edge technologies and STEM careers behind helmet safety and turf management.

From using flexible hybrid electronics to design a helmet that protected their “egg football players” to learning about concussions and the brain, the day was packed with interactive learning!

Students applied the engineering design process by testing their helmet creations, dropping their eggs from several feet to see if their designs would hold up under impact, simulating real-life scenarios.

A group of children and a skeleton dressed in a maroon Wildcats football jersey stand around a table decorated with a green football field mat. The children are holding various items, including small sports balls, while the skeleton holds a football. The scene captures a fun, playful atmosphere, likely related to a sports-themed event or gathering.

We were thrilled to have special guest Glenn Lucas, MHSAA official, walk the students through the advancements in helmet technology and football turf over the years. The students even got to compare helmets from the 90s to modern designs, gaining insight into the evolution of football safety gear.

A smiling girl with blonde hair holds a decorated rock with a painted face, wearing a pink shirt with colorful text. In the background, two children are visible: one girl with curly hair and a headband, and a boy wearing a maroon sports jersey. The setting appears to be a classroom.

Students also explored advanced manufacturing in the football industry and wrapped up the day with some math skills as Mr. Lucas taught them how to throw a penalty flag like a pro!

We kicked off Manufacturing Month by hosting this exciting camp, showcasing the vital role of modern manufacturing in industries like football.

Michelle Courtney, PRCC’s MS-SHIPS Program Coordinator, shared, “It’s crucial that we introduce students to advanced manufacturing early, helping them see the exciting STEM career pathways available. Camps like these spark curiosity and show how technology and innovation shape the future of industries they may one day work in.”

A big thanks to all the students who spent their fall break with us, making touchdowns in technology and STEM!
