Connecting Hearts and Minds: PRCC Donor Dinner Unites Benefactors and Scholarship Recipients

November 10, 2023

Donors and students came together for the annual Donor Dinner hosted by the PRCC Alumni Association and Development Foundation. Held on October 30 in the Olivia Bender Cafeteria, the dinner serves to thank donors and connect them with many students who received scholarships through the Foundation.

Donors and scholarship recipients were able to talk before and during the dinner.

Attendees were provided with highlights of PRCC, including the college’s continued growth, continued standing of being the fourth-largest community college in the state, and another year of record enrollment. Recent and upcoming expansion plans for the college were mentioned, including recent aerial footage of the new Hancock Campus.

The Voices, an elite performing group of PRCC Students, provided entertainment that showcased the talent on campus. They unveiled a new Country Medley performed by female soloists and a selection they sang at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) Quarterfinal last spring.

The ability to afford tuition can seem like an insurmountable hurdle for some students. PRCC President Dr. Adam Breerwood and the Board of Trustees have worked to keep tuition frozen while expanding offerings. Through the generosity of donors to the Foundation, the creation and sustainment of scholarships can help remove financial obstacles making obtaining an education possible.

“Often, what it takes for someone to be a successful student is not the coursework,” said Breerwood. “Rather, it is the financial obligations and challenges for families to make a decision of whether they can afford to send their child to college or need the money for basic life essentials.

“When you give to these scholarships, know that it is going directly to create pathways for success. Here at Pearl River, we take that responsibility very seriously.”

Executive Director of Development Foundation/Alumni Association Delana Harris shared the importance of the scholarships along with the work the Foundation does for the college. Donors and scholarship representatives have contributed to over 200 scholarships and provide over half a million dollars in funding support to PRCC students each year.

“The scholarship dinner is an important event because it brings together two very special groups; our donors and our scholarship recipients,” said Harris. “We are so thankful for the support we receive from our donors and community sponsors.

“The students that receive Foundation support are some of the best from across our campuses and represent our college very well. The dinner allows our students to meet their donors and thank them for giving them the opportunity to pursue their educational and career goals.”

Donors at the dinner appreciated the opportunity to meet students impacted by their generosity. Students who attended could meet the donors and thank them.

Students were given the opportunity to write a thank you note for their donor.

Audrey Bolin, a sophomore studying music education, spoke on behalf of the students in attendance.

“On behalf of the students receiving scholarships, thank you,” said Bolin. “Words can never fully convey what your support means.

“You have created a wonderful legacy for us to follow. Hopefully, we can provide the next generation of Wildcats with the same love and support that you have given us.”
