Surgical Technology

Thank you for your interest in the Surgical Technology (SUT) Program at Pearl River Community College (PRCC). The Surgical Technology Program offers two programs starts each year. 

Students may use previous coursework to meet the academic requirements in the SUT Program Plan of Study.

August start- Deadline to apply is May 1st

January start- Deadline to apply is October 1st

HOW TO APPLY

Step 1: Complete PRCC Application

Within 3-5 days after you apply, you will receive RiverGuide Credentials. Once you receive your RiverGuide Credentials, applicants can complete the Surgical Tech Application. 

Current PRCC students may skip to the Surgical Tech application.

Step 2: Submit Your
Transcript

You must escript (preferred) or mail an official high school transcript and official transcripts from all previously attended colleges to:

Step 3: Complete the
Surgical Tech Application

Use your RiverGuide credentials to complete the SUT application.

Deadline to apply is May 1 for August (Fall semester) 
Deadline to apply for  January (Spring semester) is October 1

*Coursework previously taken may be used for requirements in the SUT Plan of Study.

Upon completion of the application, you will receive an email (within 1 week) stating that your application has been received for the current program application period along with further information.

Additional Admissions Information

  • You must have an ACT minimum score of 16 (18 preferred) on file at PRCC.
  • High school Transcripts and Official College Transcripts of all previous colleges attended must be on file with PRCC 
  • You can save your application information before submitting, exiting, and returning later to complete the application.  
  • Once you have completed the information and submitted the application, the application will no longer be available to you. 
  • You will receive an email stating that your application has been submitted for the current program application period along with further information. 

NOTES:
You will receive an e-mail from the SUT Administrative Assistant (Cheryl Breland: cbreland@prcc.edu) within 1 week of completing your application.  

  • If you do not receive an e-mail, please email surgicaltech@prcc.eduregarding your file.  
  • Your file will be considered incomplete if the requirements are not met. 

Program Application Checklist:

Interview Process:

Applicants with the highest points for ACT and GPA will be invited for an interview. Applicants will be selected based on the following: 

  • Selection Process Guidelines (PDF-Selection Process) 
  • Knowledge of the Surgical Technology field and duties of a Surgical Technologist. 
  • Interest in becoming a Surgical Technologist. 
  • Verbal and nonverbal communication skills 
  • Alternates may be chosen to fill vacancies that could arise before the end of late registration. 

Please note, that if you are selected for an interview, you will receive an email from our department concerning the dates and times of the interviews.  

NOTES:  

  • Application submission and/or meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. 
  • Completed file and participation in the Interview do not guarantee a position in the class.  
  • All statements related to admission criteria or announcements of present policies are subject to revisions. 
  • Any advice the Surgical Technology department gives regarding coursework does not ensure acceptance into the program. 

Requirements After Program Acceptance: 

Applicants offered a class position will be required to attend a Mandatory Orientation Session.  Date and information will be e-mailed to you.

  • Failure to attend the Orientations Session or meet specific requirements and deadlines may result in forfeiture of your class position offer. Open positions may then be filled with an Alternate. Students are financially responsible for the expense of the requirements. 

Allied Health Program notes: 

  • Surgical Technology students may be randomly selected for a drug screening at any time during the course of the program, and must have a negative result. The student will be responsible for all associated costs. 
  • Surgical Technology students may be exposed to various bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and blood and bodily fluids. Universal and Standard Precautions as well as PPE (personal protective equipment) will be covered during the didactic and clinical portions of the SUT Program. 
  • Health Care Criminal History Background Check: Applicants for PRCC Allied Health/Nursing Programs may be required to submit fingerprints for a Criminal Background Check in accordance with Mississippi State Law. This process may be required by Clinical Sites. If any student is found to have a disqualifying event on their background check, they may be prohibited from attending Clinicals and, therefore will not meet Clinical criteria and will not be allowed to continue in the Program. 

Graduation Requirements: 

  • Scrub on a minimum of 120 surgical cases meeting specific requirements. 
  • Sit for the National Certification Exam for Surgical Technologists (CST), administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). 
  • Pass all SUT Plan of Study required courses with a “C” or higher. 
  • Completion of LLS 1311 or LLS 1313 at PRCC.
  • Have a minimum of overall 2.0 GPA.

Each community college president is asked to bring two (2) wrapped door prizes, minimum value of $50 each. We will have a station set up at the conference for you to drop off the door prizes.

Each community college is asked to provide name tags for their Board members, administration, and staff attending the conference.
