Unforgettable Musical Events at Pearl River

MSO

Poplarville – If the sounds of The Beatles, Game of Thrones, and classical melodies were heard through the streets of the Poplarville Monday night, it was just musical talent sneaking out of the Ethel Holden Brownstone Center at Pearl River Community College. PRCC played host to the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra (MSO) for the third, Monday September 17, 2018.

The MSO) performed music from The Sandpaper Ballet, a score composed by Leroy Anderson in 1954, to the Game of Thrones theme song of today. The first half was composed of both the classical and classic rock including a melody of Beatles songs. After intermission, the MSO director, Crafton Beck, mentioned that the most requested music by the group was the GOT theme song and songs from the Frozen movie soundtrack. He announced that they would be performing both for the audience that very night. Along with these fan favorites, the MSO also performed a tribute to the branches of the military during which each branch was asked to stand and be recognized. Beck also spoke about how much he enjoyed playing in the Brownstone and that it had become one of the group’s favorite venues to visit.

Many instructors of music appreciation classes at PRCC brought their students to enjoy the event. Janet Kennedy, PRCC Adjunct Music Appreciation Instructor and Poplarville local, talked about the importance of the performance in her class. “Having the opportunity to attend the Mississippi Symphony concert at the Brownstone was a phenomenal experience for the students,” said Kennedy. “Prior to attending the concert, the class learned about the instruments of the orchestra and what kind of music they play. In addition, we learned about concert etiquette and appropriate attire. All of these components culminated in their attendance of the actual concert.”

Sponsors that made this event possible and their representatives are Coca-Cola – Russ Hendley, Clearman Agency – John Clearman, Rameys of Poplarville – Austin White, and Bank Plus – Greg Mitchell and Ina Legg.

Trevor Hunt, Department Chair of Fine Arts and Communication/Director of Brownstone Performing Arts Center, spoke about the event. “Hosting the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra at the Brownstone Center is always an honor and a treat. I can't think of a better way to kick off the 2018-19 season here at PRCC. We are thrilled to continue providing the college and community with opportunities to enjoy outstanding performances that appeal to a wide range of interests. We have some very exciting performances coming up this semester: PRCC Fine Arts Halloween concert, our Christmas concert featuring the JazzCats, the Voices, and the Nutcracker.  On February 7th 2019—the day the Beatles landed in the US-- we are celebrating the 55th anniversary of the British invasion with The Return: A Beatles Tribute. There are some really exciting, student and community-centered performances coming this year.  I invite everyone to come out and join us for an evening of entertainment and experience the Brownstone Center!”
