Summer Bridge Students Honored

POPLARVILLE – Thursday, June 26 Pearl River Community College’s Student Support Services Summer Bridge Program held their Student Recognition Banquet.

Eighteen students were recognized for finishing the Summer Bridge Program curriculum. This is a four week intensive program that allows for students to transition from high school to college and get an early start to their education. These students will begin their fall semester with 9 credit hours already completed.

Georgia Field, Director of Student Support Services, congratulated the students on their achievement and hard work over the summer and impressed upon them the importance of staying connected to Student Support Services and continuing to reach out to the office for continued support. “We aren’t done with you and I hope you aren’t done with us,” Field said.

Maghan James, Assistant Vice President of Student Services, spoke to the students about the importance of the program they just completed and congratulated them on getting a jump start to college.

Georgia Field, Cindy Morris, Administrative Assistant/Peer Tutor Coordinator; and Lauren Baker, Academic Success Coach/Peer Tutor/Coach Supervisor, presented each student with a certificate of completion and recognized them for their perseverance. Instructors Lois McDonald and Sylvia Martinez were also recognized for their commitment to the program and their students.

Special awards were given for outstanding performance throughout the semester. Best Hashtag Photographer was awarded to Sciana Lavergne. The Basic Communication Skills award was presented to Savannah Kennedy. Zoey Warren received the Basic Computation Skills award. The Community College Survival Skills award was given to Amanda Powe and Jason Foster received the Overall Student award.

In addition to those receiving awards, class members are Derrian Bradley, Waveland; Bryonn Bramlett, Monticello; Taylar Copeland, Carriere; Kelly Dutruch, Bogalusa; Millenium “Mia” Earl, Hattiesburg; Kee’Von Fells, Lumberton; Jason “Gage” Foster, Hattiesburg; A’Niya John, Poplarville; Sciana Lavergne, Long Beach; LaBritney Magee, Osyka; Brooklyne McNeely, Perkinston; Aloysius Neff III, Picayune; Amanda Powe, Carriere; Darius Roscoe, Gulfport; Jerricka Smith, Saucier; Zoey Warren, Carriere; and Alicia Watts, Hattiesburg.

In closing, former student, Austin Warner, spoke about his obstacles and successes while at PRCC and gave encouragement to the group. Austin will be attending Mississippi State University in the fall.

The main criteria for Student Support Services is the need for academic support based on ACT scores, grade point average in high school, graduation from an Adult Basic Education Program, being a non-traditional student who has been out of school for more than five years or having a disability. Participants must also meet at least one of the following: low-income, neither parent has graduated from a four-year college with a degree or disabled.

Each community college president is asked to bring two (2) wrapped door prizes, minimum value of $50 each. We will have a station set up at the conference for you to drop off the door prizes.
