River sweeps ICC, GCCC

POPLARVILLE Pearl River Community College pulled off a doubleheader baseball sweep here Monday, downing Illinois Central (Ill.) 11-3 before nipping Garden City (Kan.) 6-5 in the nightcap game. GCCC Broncbusters defeated the host Wildcats 5-1 on Sunday, while The River swept ICC Cougars 10-0 (six innings) and 8-4 on Saturday. Pearl River improved to 14-4 with Monday wins, while ICC dropped to 3-14 and GCCC is now 11-8. Against Illinois Central, things were tied 3-3 after two innings with both squads scoring two in the first and one in the second. The third, fourth, fifth, and half of the sixth frame went scoreless until the Wildcats bombarded the Cougars with an eight-run barrage. The game ended after ICC failed to catch up in the top of the seventh. Deon Fairley (2-0) of Bassfield High got the win after relieving in the fourth. He went three innings, gave up a hit, struck out two, and walked two; while Tyler Summers of Greene County High started and went three frames, giving up five hits and walking four. Martin Anderson out of Cedar Creek High in Calhoun, La., relieved in the seventh, giving up a hit and striking out two. Starter Luke Etnier got the loss in his five innings on the mound, giving up nine hits and walking two; while T.R. Dunne relieved in the sixth. He gave up a hit, struck out two, and walked one. Ethan Westart led the Cougars seven-hit effort with three singles, while Alex Gutierrez had two base hits (one RBI) and Marshal Escue (one RBI) and Kory Mirabal both singled. The Wildcats finished with 10 hits, led by Ryan Best of Oak Grove High (one RBI), Chase Lewallen of Sumrall High (three RBIs), and Krisjon Wilkerson out of St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis (one RBI) with two singles a piece; while Braxton Lee of Picayune High doubled and Forrest Dungan of Columbia High, Chad Livingston of Slidell (La.) High, and Clint Willoughby of Clinton High (one RBI) all had base hits. ICC committed two errors in the game to PRCC one. Against Garden City, the Broncbusters went up 2-0 in the top of the second before Pearl River tied it up in the bottom of the third. GCCC scored a go-ahead solo run in the top of the fourth only to see The River score three in the bottom of the frame for a 5-4 advantage. After the fifth and sixth went scoreless, Garden City tied it up in the top of the seventh; while Pearl River solo run in the bottom of the inning ended the game. Scott Ashford (1-0) out of Catholic High in Baton Rouge, La., got the win despite facing only one batter (a strikeout) after relieving in the seventh, while Trace Robinson of Purvis High started and went six-and-a-third, giving up seven hits, striking out three, and walking two. Roy Gasaway Jr. of Pascagoula High also pitched in the seventh, giving up a hit, as well as Anderson, who walked a batter. Brandon Roberts (0-3) got the loss after relieving in the sixth, going one inning and giving up four hits; while Mitch Franek started. He went four innings, gave up eight hits, and walked two; while Dillon Ayres relieved in the fifth, giving up a hit, striking out one, and walking one. Garden City finished with eight hits, led by Dietrick Turney with a home run, a double, and a single (one RBI); while Shea Bell, Dakota Kill, Turner Lofing, Brand Michaleski (one RBI), and Desmond Roberts (two RBIs) all had base hits. Zac Baldini had an RBI for the Broncbusters. Chase Toussaint of Petal High paced The River 13-hit attack with a double and three singles (one RBI), while Braxton Lee doubled and singled (one RBI), Lewallen had two base hits, and Best, Dungan (one RBI), Marcus Lawton Jr. of Biloxi High (one RBI), DaVonte Linear, and Aaron Lee of Pearl River Central High all singled. Pearl River committed two errors in the contest to Garden City one. The Wildcats open MACJC South Division play Wednesday when it hosts the Hinds Eagles in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
