All instructional personnel will be assigned a stipulated teaching load based upon a specified contract period.
All instructional personnel will meet the requirements of the appropriate performance descriptions.
Regular Full-time Instructors
A regular full-time instructor is required to work a 30 hour week in a fall or spring semester. A regular full-time instructor will meet assigned classes and a minimum of five office hours per week for student appointments.
Regular Part-time Instructors
A regular part-time instructor is required to work a specified contracted percent of the 30 hour work week in a fall or spring semester. A regular part-time instructor will meet assigned class(es) and the required percent of contract based on a 30 hour work week.
Each regular instructor, whether full-time or part-time, will post a schedule of classes and office hours near the door of his or her office at the beginning of each semester. This schedule must be approved by the instructor's immediate supervisor and by the administration. A copy of the schedule will be filed with the instructor’s department chair.
An adjunct instructor is required to work the specified amount of time to meet the instructional hours of the course(s) as contracted.
NORMAL TEACHING LOADS:
The normal teaching load for an academic instructor in a fall or spring semester is fifteen (15) semester hours of lecture classes per week. The normal teaching load for an instructor of laboratory science courses is nine (9) semester hours of lecture classes and four (4) semester hours (eight contact hours) of laboratory classes or a total of seventeen (17) contact hours. A teaching load exceeding fifteen (15) semester hours or seventeen (17) contact hours per week would be compensated for the additional teaching assignment at an overload rate.
The normal teaching load for a technical instructor in a fall or spring semester is twenty (20) contact hours per week. An instructional load exceeding twenty (20) contact hours would be compensated at an overload rate.
The normal teaching load for a career instructor in a fall or spring semester is thirty (30) contact hours per week. An instructional load exceeding thirty (30) contact hours would be compensated at an overload rate.
Online Teaching Assignments:
A. All faculty members who teach online are developing courses for the Mississippi Virtual Community College (MSVCC). As stated in the MSVCC policy and procedure manual, the Chief Academic Office (who is the VP for Poplarville Campus and Instruction at PRCC) is to ensure the quality of online course(s) that are offered by PRCC. The Office of eLearning is the primary liaison between Pearl River Community College and the MSVCC. Therefore, the Office of eLearning is obligated to make sure that the decisions made align with MSVCC policies. To ensure the quality of the online courses at PRCC, the Office of eLearning is responsible for hiring qualified instructors to teach online. In addition, the Office of eLearning is responsible for evaluating all online instructors and terminating ineffective online instructors.
B. New online instructors are assigned an online course as the need for the given subject area arises. All faculties assigned to teach an online course must be approved by the Director of eLearning with the input from the lead online instructors or department chairs, as requested.
C. New online instructor candidates must meet all qualifications listed on the Online Instructor Job Description in order to be considered to teach online. Potential online instructors must notify the Director of eLearning at the beginning of the previous semester in order to be considered for the next semester. For the first semester, new online instructors will be granted one section. If needed, a second section will be granted for the next semester as long as the instructor is in good standing with the Office of eLearning. The Director of eLearning will review course evaluation(s), retention data, administrative tasks and other job responsibilities that are indicated in the Online Instructor job description to determine whether an instructor is in good standing.
D. Online courses that have been approved by the Director of eLearning as part of a full-time instructor’s regular load will receive priority in the scheduling of online courses. The assignment of online courses is the responsibility of the Director of eLearning. Because course assignments are based on enrollment need, faculty members (both full-time and adjunct) will be limited to the number of online classes that are taught each semester. Additional classes must be approved by the Director of eLearning. Professional staff will follow the same procedures as the adjunct faculty. The determination of course section assignment will be based on course evaluations, retention, and administrative processes. The Office of eLearning will create the online schedule each term. Course ordering is subject to change.
Additional Teaching Assignments:
Prior to preparation of the teaching assignments for the next fall semester, spring semester, or summer session, the Vice President for Poplarville Campus and Instruction will direct, through an email message, that any member of the faculty who would like to be considered to teach a(n) night, online, overload, or weekend class in that semester or session to notify the appropriate person by email or in writing. The person to notify and the deadline for such notification will be included in the message. A qualified member of the regular faculty of the College will normally be given first choice to teach a class if his or her desire is expressed prior to the stated deadline.
An instructor is limited to teaching no more than fifteen (15) semester hours including day classes, night classes, online, and/or weekend classes, in an entire summer session. An instructor may be assigned no more than three (3) different course preparations during the entire summer session.
Administrators are to assign summer classes according to the criteria below, listed in priority order. Steps 1 through 4 are to be repeated until each instructor has been assigned the number of classes requested or each instructor has been assigned the maximum number of classes allowed.
- Regular faculty members whose employment is at the location where classes are to be taught will be assigned one class each.
- Regular faculty members whose employment is at any location, who have been teaching continuously for at least five years at the location where the classes are to be taught, will be assigned one class each.
- Regular faculty members whose employment is at the location where classes are to be taught will each be assigned an additional class.
- Regular faculty members who employment is at any location, who have been teaching for at least five years at the location where the classes are to be taught, will each be assigned an additional class.
- Other regular faculty members will be assigned classes up to the maximum permitted.
- Adjunct instructors will each be assigned classes up to the maximum permitted.
DEFINITION OF TERMS:
Regular Faculty Member:
An instructor or other member of the professional staff who has been hired by action of the Board of Trustees of Pearl River Community College. Note that temporary faculty members, whether part-time or full-time, have not been hired by action of the Board of Trustees.
Any person who is not a regular faculty member.
The actual hours a class meets.
Hours of course credit.
Hours spent in a laboratory as a part of a course.
Number of Preparations:
The number of different courses taught by an instructor.
The hours that have been specified when a faculty member is in his/her office.
Activities outside of teaching assignments that are in support of college functions.
Leadership positions assigned to faculty members over an instructional area.
- performing evaluations of instructors and staff members in the department
- preparing and administering department budgets
- maintaining a current equipment and materials inventory
- initiating purchase orders for supplies and equipment
- recommending curriculum changes
- assisting with schedules and assignments
- supervising instructors and staff members in the department
A department chair or other administrator should be prepared to justify assigning more than three different lecture preparations to an instructor in one semester.
Distance Education Courses:
A distance education course may count toward a full-time faculty teaching load or may be an overload course for a full-time faculty member.
