Wildcats unable to get doubleheader sweep against Meridian

Pearl River Community College once let a chance to keep its flickering playoff hopes alive in an MACJC doubleheader against Meridian Friday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats played one of their best all-around games of the season in the opener, defeating the Eagles 11-3 in six innings, but were unable to seal the deal in the nightcap, as Meridian broke open a scoreless game in the late innings to win 5-1.

PRCC (18-20 overall, 10-16 conference) is still mathematically alive for the eighth and final spot in the MACJC State Tournament, but the Wildcats need a lot of things to go their way to squeeze into the playoffs. Meridian (15-20, 10-14) is in a similar situation as Pearl River.

In the first game, freshmen Ilyssa Easton, Olivia Holley and Krista Robles each had two-run doubles in the consecutive innings to pace the Wildcats offensively. Easton also had a pair of singles.

The Eagles broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, then added three more in the seventh after PRCC got a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Wildcats were held to just five hits, all singles.

Following the doubleheader, PRCC honored its five sophomores who played their final game at Wildcat Stadium. They were Brooke Barnes, Kristin Martin, Katie Perry, Madison Scoggin and Jackie Shows.

Pearl River completes its regular-season schedule next week with road games against LSU-Eunice in non-conference play at 2 p.m. Wednesday and Holmes at 1 p.m. Saturday in its conference and season finale.
