Wildcats swept in doubleheader against Dyersburg State

Superior pitching and timely hitting proved too much for Pearl River Community College Friday afternoon as the Wildcats suffered a doubleheader setback against Dyersburg State (Tenn.).

The visiting Eagles rapped out 13 hits and rode a dominating performance on the mound from freshman Seth Wyse in a 11-3 win in the opener, then took a 5-0 lead and held on to prevail 5-2 in the nightcap.

PRCC dropped to 0-4 for the season; Dyersburg improved to 11-1.

Wyse baffled the Wildcats for much of the game, retiring the first 13 batters he faced before Pearl River mustered any offense. In all, Wyse struck out eight and walked just one, scattering six hits in eight innings.

Dyersburg State jumped on Wildcat starter Parker Dungan (0-1) for three runs on six hits in the top of the second inning, then added two more in the fourth off reliever Jason Garrett.

PRCC got two runs in the fifth off Wyse (3-0), one run coming in on an error and the other scoring on Donte Peters’ double.

The Eagles broke the game open with four runs in the eighth, on a two-run homer by John Ham and a two-run triple by Chandler Adkins, and they added two more on a two-run homer by Andrew Swanson.

Swanson got Dyersburg off to a good start in the second game, as he jacked a three-run homer in the top of the first inning off PRCC sophomore Drake Nightengale.

The Eagles added a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth off Nightengale (0-2), who struck out nine batters, but also allowed nine hits and had two costly wild pitches,

The Wildcats finally showed signs of life in the sixth inning off DSCC starter Ronnie Broyles (2-1), getting back-to-back solo homers from Simon Landry and Graham Hackbarth.

Pearl River then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out off reliever Kolton Childress, but Peyton Lee grounded into a game-ending double play.

PRCC will be back in action on Wednesday, when they battle Bossier Parish (La.) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Millsaps College in Jackson.
