Wildcats sweep past winless Mississippi Delta

brook smithanna grace cooleyilyssa eastonWith a postseason berth still in play, Pearl River Community College needed to, “take care of business,” in the words of head coach Leigh White.

The Wildcats did just that Saturday afternoon against winless Mississippi Delta, sweeping the MACJC doubleheader in a pair of run-rule victories, 15-1 in the opener and 13-0 in the nightcap.

PRCC improved to 16-18 overall and 8-14 in league play. Despite their record, the Wildcats are still very much in the running for one of eight berths in the MACJC State Tournament with six conference games remaining. MDCC dropped to 0-27 and 0-18.

“We did. We took care of business,” said White, whose team has had to battle through injuries and illness this season. “These were two good wins; hopefully this will give us a jumpstart to Tuesday with Co-Lin.”

Freshman Anna Grace Cooley was 7 for 8 in the two games, driving in four runs in the first game. Freshman Brook Smith also had three singles in the opener. Freshman Ilyssa Easton had three RBIs in the second game with a triple and a single.

Pearl River hosts Copiah-Lincoln at 3 p.m. Tuesday and Meridian next Friday in the final home doubleheader of the season.
