Wildcats snap losing skid with sweep over Tigers

Pearl River’s Christian Smith speeds home for a runPOPLARVILLE --- Pearl River snapped a six-game losing streak here Friday in Wildcat Stadium with an 8-5, 6-3 MACJC baseball doubleheader sweep over Northeast Mississippi.
Outfielder Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High belted a pair of two-run homers in both wins, while Southeastern Louisiana signee Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High and Gage Teer of Brandon High smashed solo dingers in the opening contest.
The Wildcats, who cracked 10 hits in each of the battles, improved to 9-15 overall and 3-5 in league play, while the visiting Tigers dropped to 8-10 and 3-5.
In the opening game, the game was scoreless until the top of the second when LSU-signee Jacob Taylor, PRCC’s starter out of Picayune High, walked lead off Josh Peterson before scoring off back-to-back singles by Eric Patterson and Scott Pala. Patterson was nailed at second on Pala’s RBI base hit, while Hayden Cummings followed with a single to center before Colby Williams hit into a double play.
Pearl River tied it up in the bottom of the third when Christian Smith of Poplarville High drew a one-out walk, stole second an out later, and scored off a single by Kreg Garner of Northwest Rankin High.
The 1-1 stalemate stayed intact until the sixth. In the top of the inning, lead off Trent Turner singled to left field, setting the stage for Jack Hurdle’s two-run homer over the left field wall before Taylor retired three straight.
The Wildcats tied it up in the bottom of the frame when Mount led off with a home run and Haskin followed two outs later with a solo homer --- both over the left field wall. Tiger starter Cody Bo Dillard was relieved by Dustin Allen at that point and Allen immediately walked Teer and gave up a base hit to Carter Hankins of Forrest County AHS before Garren Berry of Petal High grounded out to the mound.
Zachary Boone of Columbia High relieved Taylor to start the seventh and gave up a lead off single to Cummings before walking Williams. The Tiger duo advanced to second and third off a passed ball before both scored off back-to-back sacrifice flies to center field by Jordan Montgomery Ben Foster. Trent Turner’s ensuing base hit and Hurdle’s base on balls prompted Boone’s mount exit for Carlo Lott of Pascagoula High, who retired Josh Peterson for the final out with Northeast up 5-3.
The River got a run back in the bottom off the frame when Seth Farmer of Loyd Star High and Smith led off with singles to right field and Taylor Bobo arrived in relief of Allen, who immediately gave up an RBI single to Mount.
The Wildcats pelted the Tigers with the game’s final four runs in the bottom of the eighth. After walking lead off Southern Miss signee Tracy Hadley, Jr. of Pascagoula High, Townsend Myers relieved Bobo and gave up a two-run homer by Teer an out later. PRCC loaded the bases with two hit batters --- Hankins and Farmer --- and a single by Bray, setting the stage for Mount’s two-run single an out later. Trace Lee faced Garner for the final out of the inning.
The Tigers went three up, three down in the ninth.
Lott (1-0) got the win after relieving in the seventh, pitching two-and-a-thirds innings and recording a strikeout, while starter Taylor went six frames, giving up five hits, striking out two, and walking three. Boone pitched the first two out of the seventh, giving up two hits and walking one.
Myers (0-2) got the loss after relieving in the eighth, going two-thirds of an inning and giving up three hits, while starter Dillard went five-and-two-thirds, giving up four hits and walking a batter. Allen pitched one-third of an inning, giving up three hits and walking a batter, Bobo pitched an inning and walked a batted, while Lee pitched the final out.
Northeast finished with seven hits, led by Cummings and Turner with two singles each, while Hurdle homered (two RBIs) and Montgomery (one RBI) and Patterson both singled. Foster and Papa both had RBIs for the Tigers.
Mount paced Pearl River’s 10-hit attack with a home run and two singles (four RBIs), while Haskin (two RBIs) and Teer (two RBIs) both homered. Bray, Farmer, Garner (one RBI), Hankins, and Smith all had base hits.
Each team committed an error in the contest.
In the nightcap, Northeast went up 1-0 in the top of the second off a solo homer by Hurdle, while The River answered with two in the bottom of the frame. Hankins and Bray led off with singles, before Mount walked two outs later to load the bases. Garner responded with a two-run single before Hadley was retired to end the inning.
The Tigers took a one-run lead in the top of the third when lead off Brock Roberts was belted by a pitch and Montgomery singled an out later before Foster drove in Roberts after reaching on an error. Turner followed with an RBI single to make it 3-2.
The Wildcats tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Haskin drew a lead off walk, Teer reached on a fielder’s choice, and Hankins was beaned by a pitch. Bray’s ensuing base hit scored Teer to knot things at 3-3.
Pearl River scored the game’s final three runs in the bottom of the fourth when Hadley cracked a one-out single and Haskin followed with a two-run homer over the left field wall. Teer then singled to left and scored an out later off a Bray base hit before Farmer grounded out to end the inning.
River starter Mount (1-0) got the win in his five innings of work, giving up four hits, striking out three, and walking three, while Trey Grice of Forrest County AHS pitched the final two frames in relief, giving up two hits, striking out two, and walking one.
Northeast starter Landon Boyd (3-1) got the loss in his three-and-a-third innings on the mound, giving up six hits, striking out two, and walking three, while Caleb Goff pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit, striking out two and walking two. Lee saw one-and-two-thirds innings of relief, giving up a hit, striking out two, and walking two, while Hunter Hudson pitched a third of an inning.

Northeast committed two errors in the game to PRCC’s one.
