POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College overcame a slow start and cruised to a 103-74 victory over the William Carey University junior varsity Wednesday night at M.R. White Coliseum.
Pearl River improved to 4-0 for the season; the Carey JV dropped to 0-4.
The Crusaders held their own with the Wildcats for a good part of the first half. Carey led by as many as six points, and the two teams traded the lead 10 times before PRCC asserted itself with a 26-9 surge.
The Wildcats led 49-35 at halftime.
Pearl River blew it open in the second half, going on a 21-0 run over a six-minute period, and led by as many as 39 points midway through the period.
PRCC had five players reach double figures, led by 6-foot-6 freshman Kirk Parker (Vicksburg) with 18 points. Freshman Eric Thornton Jr. (Jackson) had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Willie Logan (Flowood) added 14 points.
Former Wildcat Javonte McDavid led all scorers with 25 points for Carey, and Quindarian McCullum added 17 points.
The Wildcats will hit the road for their next contest, Saturday against Southern-Shreveport. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
