POPLARVILLE – If Pearl River Community College was looking to see how it handled adversity heading back into South Division play, the Wildcats certainly got what they were looking for Tuesday night against Delgado (La.).
The scrappy Dolphins, who only dressed six players, gave undefeated PRCC all it wanted before the Wildcats finally pulled away for a 77-69 victory at M.R. White Coliseum.
Freshman Eric Thornton Jr. (Jackson) scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, as the Wildcats improved to 9-0 for the season. Delgado dropped to 2-12.
The two teams played through nine ties and 10 lead changes, and neither team led by more than eight points.
Thornton’s three-point play with 8:57 to play put Pearl River ahead for good at 57-56, and the Wildcats outscored the Dolphins 13-6 over the final 4:40 to secure the victory.
Sophomore Ray Anderson (New Orleans) added 12 points and 15 rebounds, as the Wildcats overcame a sub-par shooting night (29 of 71 for 40.8 percent) by outrebounding Delgado 46-15. PRCC also converted 14 of 20 foul shots.
Pearl River resumes division play Thursday at Southwest. Tipoff at Summit is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
