River swept at East Central

Pearl River’s Rachel Hickman picked up the loss in the Lady Wildcats’ 7-3 loss to East Central DECATUR --- Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats were swept by East Central in MACJC South Division softball doubleheader action here Tuesday, wrapping up the regular season for both squads.
The host Lady Warriors pulled off a 7-3 victory in the opening game before bombarding The River 9-0 in five innings via the eight-run rule in the nightcap.
PRCC ended its regular season at 22-21 overall and 12-16 in division play, while ECCC, No. 2 in the division, is now36-8 and 22-6.
Still in the post-season playoff hunt, Pearl River remains in fourth place in the South pending Wednesday’s outcome of fifth-place Copiah-Lincoln’s division twin bill with Hinds at Wesson. At least one CLCC loss in that doubleheader would secure fourth for the Lady Wildcats and a berth in one of four playoff series set for this weekend. The series’ winners will advance to the MACJC State Tournament set for May 1-2.
The South Division’s fourth-place finisher will face the North champ --- either Northwest Mississippi at Senatobia or Itawamba at Fulton --- in its playoff series.
In Tuesday’s first game in Decatur, East Central went up 2-0 in the first inning off two walks and two base hits and that scored remained intact until the bottom of the fourth when Katlyn Duke belted a lead off solo homer over the left center field fence.
In the bottom of the fifth, ECCC added three more runs to make it 6-0 off a two-run double by Duke and an error.
PRCC scored its three runs with two outs in the top of the sixth off four straight singles by Poplarville High alums Breanna Herndon, Rachel Hickman, and Branda Northrop and Hannah Holloway of Petal High.
Mahalia Gibson’s solo homer in the bottom of the frame ended the scoring.
Lacy Hill (14-5) picked up the win in going the distance, giving up four hits, striking out nine, and walking one, while Hickman (9-10) got the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up 11 hits, striking out four and walking four.
Holloway led the Lady Wildcats at the plate with two singles (one RBI), while Herndon, Hickman (two RBIs), and Northrop all had base hits.
Caitlyn Aldous paced the Lady Warriors’ 11-hit effort with three base hits (one RBI), while Duke homered and doubled (two RBIs), Mallory Turner doubled and singled, Gibson homered (one RBI), and Maegan Ellis, Andi Hannaford (one RBI), and Karoline Holsonback all singled.
East Central played error free, while Pearl River had one defensive miscue.
In the nightcap, the ECCC scored seven of its nine runs in the first, including a three-run homer by three-hole batter Gibson. All told, 12 batters came to the plate in the inning.
After a scoreless second, East Central scored the game’s final runs in the third off a two-run single by Gibson.
Chloe Thaggard (15-2) was the winning pitcher in going the distance, giving up a meager two hits, striking out nine, and walking three, while Lady Wildcat starter Dani Barton (2-2) of Harrison Central High got the loss. She pitched two-thirds of the first, gave up three hits, struck out one, and walked two, before Skylar Cook of St. Amant (La.) High relieved. Cooke went three-and-a-third, gave up five hits, struck out three, walked two, and beaned a batter with a pitch.
Mary Grace Key of Leake Academy doubled for Pearl River in the third, while Northrop singled in the fifth.
Gibson led the Lady Warriors at the plate with a home runs and a single (four RBIs), while Holsonback doubled and singled, Turner had two base hits (one RB), and Ellis (one RBI) and Anna Katherine Nowell both singled.
Again, ECCC played error free, while PRCC committed one error.
