River sweeps Jones County in South Division soccer

           POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College swept arch-rival Jones County women’s and men’s MACJC South Division soccer action here Tuesday with the Lady Wildcats handing the 10th-ranked Lady Bobcats their first loss of the season with a 1-0 decision, while the Wildcats were 3-1 winners in the nightcap game.
            PRCC’s women improved to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in division play, while its men are now 7-3 and 5-1. JCJC’s women dropped to 11-1 and 5-0, while its men are now 8-2-1 and 5-1.
            In the women’s game, sophomore midfielder Brooke Blackledge of Northeast Jones High banged in a penalty kick less than 10 minutes into the game and that was all the Lady Wildcats would need to clinch victory.
            In the men’s game, freshman forward Ray Wesson of Gulfport High scored on a header off a corner kick less than two minutes into the contest to put The River up 1-0 and that score remained intact at the half.
            JCJC bounced back in the second half when Souleymane Diakite knotted the score with 32:25 left before PRCC scored back-to-back goals to ice the victory. Sophomore forward Dyllon Beasley of Presbyterian Christian High scored the Wildcats’ first goal of the second half with 19:55 left, while freshman midfielder Gerrad McLaurin of Ocean Springs High scored the final goal with 12:01 remaining.
            Pearl River split with Jones County in both school’s South Division openers on Sept. 6 with PRCC’s women falling 2-0, while its men’s squad was a 4-2 winner.
PRCC returns to action Saturday when MACJC South Division rival Mississippi Gulf Coast plays host in Perkinston for 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) contests, then division foe Copiah-Lincoln hosts Wednesday, Oct. 16, for 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men) contests.
