River sweeps Hinds

            RAYMOND --- Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats swept Hinds in MACJC South Division doubleheader softball action here Wednesday, bombing the host Lady Eagles 10-4 in the first game of the twin bill before pulling out a 5-4 wins in the nightcap contest.
            The victories made it a clean sweep of HCC in 2014, as the Lady ’Cats also boast 8-0 (five innings) and 4-3 wins in a previous meeting between the two teams played March 4 in Poplarville.
            PRCC improved to 17-11 overall and 11-5 in division play, while Hinds dropped to 9-23 and 5-13.
            Lady Wildcat freshman pitcher Rachel Hickman of Poplarville High picked up both victories on the mound, starting and pitching the distance in the opening game before winning in relief in the nightcap.
            In the 10-4 win, The River went up 3-0 in the top of the first and added a solo run in the second before Hinds put up its first run in the bottom of the third. The Lady Wildcats padded its lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth, while the Lady Eagles added two in the bottom of the frame.
            Pearl River closed the game with two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh, while Hinds scored its final run in the bottom of the last inning.
            Hickman (10-5) gave up 11 hits, struck out four, walked three, and hit a batter in picking up the win, while HCC’s Brandie Freeman (3-11) got the loss in going the distance, She gave up a whopping 19 hits, struck out one, and walked one.
            Heather Boutwell of Oak Grove High paced PRCC at the plate with a homer and three singles (three RBIs), while Kaci Lantrip of Terry High homered and smacked two base hits (four RBIs). Megan Scronce of Petal High had three singled (one RBI), Hickman homered and singled (two RBIs), Allie Flint of Madison Central High and Courtney Warr of Theodore (Ala.) High, two singles each, and Hannah Holloway of Petal High, Emily Jackson of Theodore (Ala.) High, and Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High, one base hit apiece.
            Monica Wade hit three singles for Hinds, while Brandie Freeman doubled and singled (two RBIs), Stacie Johnson had two singles, Nora Grace Davis and Courtenay Holt (one RBI), both doubled, and Allison Hux and Alexis Patterson (one RBI), both singled.
            Each team committed one error in the game.
            In the nightcap game, the Lady Eagles went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first, but the Lady Wildcats answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second before Hinds padded its lead to 4-2 with a solo run in the bottom of the frame.
            The River scored a solo run in the fourth before putting up a game-winning two runs in the seventh.
            Hickman (11-5) got the win after relieving in the sixth, giving up two hits, striking out two, and hitting two batters, while starter Courtney Warr of Theodore (Ala.) High went two innings, giving up five hits, striking out two, walking one, and hitting a batter before  Ashley Hawkins, another Theodore (Ala.) High recruit, relieved in the third, going three innings, giving up a hit, walking one, and hitting one batter.
            HCC starter Caitlin Dickerson (4-9) got the loss in going the distance, giving up six hits, striking out two, and walking five.
            Again, Boutwell paced PRCC at the plate with a double and a single, while Jackson (one RBI) and Lantrip (two RBIs) both homered and Lewis and Warr both singled. Holloway had an RBI for the Lady Wildcats.
            The Lady Eagles scattered eight hits, led by Wade’s three singles, while Haley Irvin had two base hits (two RBIs) and Megan Gross, Johnson, and Patterson all had base hits. Davis also had an RBI for HCC.
            Like the first game, each team committed one error in the contest.
            Pearl River returns to action Thursday when it hosts South Division foe Southwest Mississippi (5 p.m. doubleheader), then travels to division foe Meridian CC in Meridian Saturday for a 1 p.m. twin bill.
