River sweeps Faulkner

     BAY MINETTE, Ala. --- Pearl River's Lady Wildcats picked up a pair of victories here Tuesday, sweeping Faulkner State CC (Ala.) 4-2 and 3-0 to improve to 6-4 overall.
    The host Lady Sun Chiefs dropped to 6-9 with the losses.
    In the first game, things were scoreless for the first four-and-a-half innings until FSCC scored a solo run in the bottom of the fifth, but PRCC bounced back with a four-run effort in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Faulkner scored the game's final two runs in the bottom of the frame.
    Starter Rachel Hickman of Poplarville High (3-1) picked up the mound win in going the distance, giving up five hits, striking out one, walking one, and hitting three batters, while Faulkner starter Kaylyn Ingram (3-1) got the loss in her six-and-two-thirds innings on the mound. Ingram gave up 11 hits, struck out two, and walked two before Merina Young arrived in relief to record a strike out for the contest's final out.
    Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High paced the Lady Wildcats' 11-hit attack with a double and two singles, while Allie Flynt of Madison Central High and Kaci Lantrip of Terry High had two base hits each. Hickman (one RBI), Hannah Holloway of Petal High, Emily Jackson of Theodore (Ala.) High (two RBIs), and Warr, another Theodore (Ala.) High recruit, all had base hits.
    The Lady Sun Chiefs finished with five hits, led by Haley Nichols with a double and a single (one RBI), while Avery Godwin, Briana Owens, and Sara Beth Williamson all singled. Ingram also had an RBI for FSCC.
    Each team committed an error in the game.
    In the second game, Pearl River scored solo runs in the top of the second, third, and sixth frames to take the shutout victory.
    Starter Warr (2-0) got the win in her four innings on the mound, giving up a hit, striking out two, and walking one, while Ashley Hawkins of Theodore (Ala.) High pitched the final three frames, giving up four hits and striking out a batter.
    Starter Young (0-4) got the loss in going the distance on the mound, giving up six hits, striking out six, and walking six.
    Megan Scronce of Petal High (one RBI) and Heather Boutwell of Oak Grove High paced PRCC's six-hit effort with two singles each, while Warr and Flynt (one RBI) both had base hits.
    Taylor McDaniel, Nichols, Owens, Taylor Volvecky, and Williamson all singled for FSCC.
    Both teams played error free in the nightcap.
    Pearl River returns to action Thursday when the Lady Wildcats travel to MACJC non-division rival East Mississippi in Scooba for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before South Division foe Southwest Mississippi plays host Saturday in Summit for a 1 p.m. twin bill.
