River splits with Perk

POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River’s Wildcats remained tied with Mississippi Gulf Coast in the MACJC South Division derby after splitting with the visiting Bulldogs here Tuesday.
The River won the first game 3-2 thanks to a two-run effort in the sixth inning before MGCCC bounced back to hammer PRCC 16-3 in the nightcap contest in six innings via the 10-run rule.
The Wildcats are now 17-15 overall, while the Bulldogs are 14-15. Both teams are 4-8 in division play following Tuesday’s split.
In the first game, things were scoreless for the first two-and-a-half innings until Pearl River went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third. Lead off Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High doubled then Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High reached on a bunt. After Kreg Garner of Northwest Rankin High struck out, Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High drove in Brown with a sacrifice fly to left center field before Nathan Pugh of Starkville High struck out to end the inning.
After a scoreless fourth, Gulf Coast tied it up in the fifth when lead off Jacob Swiney homered over the towering left field wall, then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Richie Clark got things going for the Bulldogs with a one-out double to left, then James Land drew a walk.
PRCC starter Philip Chandler of Stone County High exited the mound at that point for reliever Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High who immediately gave up an RBI-single to Tyler Quave for a one-run edge. After Lee retired Adam Cagnina, Swiney walked to load the bases, but Winston Wilson grounded to the pitcher for the final out.
The Wildcats iced the victory in the bottom of the frame when Derek Martin of Poplarville High smacked a one-out single to right center, which saw the mound exit of Bulldog starter Cam Cochran for reliever Ryne Long. After Deanzel Johnson out of Lanier High in Jackson popped out, Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High crushed an RBI double to tie it up. Haskin wound up at third on the play and scored the winning run off a single by Kyle Dolan of Forrest County AHS before Brown popped out to end the inning.
Gulf Coast managed a base runner in the top of the seventh off Patrick McMahon’s walk, but couldn’t muster a run.
Lee (1-1) got the win in his 1.2 innings on the hill, giving up a hit, striking out one, and walking two, while Chandler went five-and-a-third, giving up three hits, striking out five, and walking three.
Long (1-2) got the loss, despite pitching only two-thirds of an inning. He gave up two hits, while Cameron went five-and-a-third, striking out nine, and walking three.
Swiney led the Bulldogs’ four-hit effort with a home run (one RBI), while Clark doubled and Land and Quave (one RBI) both had base hits.
The Wildcats finished with seven hits, led by Anthony’s two singles, while Brown and Jaskin (one RBI) both doubled, and Dolan (one RBI), Martin, and Pugh all had base hits. Mount also had an RBI for Pearl River.
MGCCC committed one error in the contest to PRCC’s none.
In the nightcap game, it was all Gulf Coast. River starter Luke McGee, an Ohio State transfer to prepped at Wooster (Oh.) High, got shelled early, giving up four runs in his two-thirds inning of action. The Bulldogs added one in the second, two in the third, and four in the fifth before the Wildcats managed their three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Gulf Coast scored its final five runs in the top of the sixth and took the 16-3 victory via the 10-run rule after Pearl River went scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
Bulldog starter Koby Ross (2-0) got the victory in his four innings on the mound, giving up zero hits, striking out three, and walking two, while Ryan Henry saw an inning of relief, giving up a hit, striking out two, and walking one. Chris Wease also pitched an inning, giving up a hit and recording a strikeout and a walk.
McGee (2-4) got the loss, giving up four hits and walking one, while Trevor Bennett of Hancock County High pitched one-and-two-thirds of relief, giving up three hits and striking out one. Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High pitched two-thirds of a frame, giving up four hits and walking one, Carlos Lott of Pascagoula High two frames, striking out two and walking two, Adam Turney out of Oak Hill Academy in West Point two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits, striking out one, and walking one, and Blake Weyenberg of Poplarville High two-thirds, giving up two hits and striking out one.
