River splits at Holmes

GOODMAN — Pearl River Community College split with Holmes in MACJC men’s and women’s non-division basketball action here Thursday with the Wildcats picking up their first loss of the season via a 52-50 setback, while the Lady Wildcats were 70-60 winners over the host Lady Bulldogs.

PRCC’s men dropped to 4-1 overall, while its women improved to 2-3. HCC’s men are now 4-1, while its women are now 3-2.

In the men’s game, the Bulldogs led 33-23 at the break, but the Wildcats bounced back to take a 27-19 advantage in the second half only to come up three points shy of victory.

Jeremy Hollimon of Gulfport High paced The River with 13 points, while Frank Snow, an Angelina JC (Tex.) transfer who prepped at Sagemont High in Wellington, Fla., added 10 (eight rebounds); Daniel Grieves, a U.S. Air Force Academy transfer who prepped at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, nine (seven rebounds), DeAngelo Coleman out of South Pike High in Magnolia and Rakeem Esco of Canton High, five each; Kaven Bernard out of Assumption High in Napoleonville, La., four; and DeVontee Cook (five rebounds), another South Pike signee, and Xavian Rimmer, an Alcorn State transfer out of Piney Woods School near Jackson, two each.

Travis Johnson led Holmes with a game-high 19 points, while Tarmarico Wilson scored 12, Demarcus Lewis eight, Daniel Francis five, Kelvin Smith three, Patrick Banks and DeAndre Scott, two each; and Daveon Slaughter one.

In the women’s game, the Lady Wildcats led 33-37 at the intermission before outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 36-33 in the second half to take the 10-point victory.

Coutney Osler of Puckett High led Pearl River with 19 points, while Chaquita McGee of Yazoo City High added 13, Daiquari Raine of Poplarville High 12, Jeronda Beason of Poplarville High 10, Valescia Dixon of East Marion High seven (11 rebounds), Kalisha Washington out of Murray High in Jackson four, and Wisdom James of Durant High and Lolecia Richardson out of Provine High in Jackson (six rebounds), two each.

Tamia Grady led Holmes with 20 points, while Denesha Dillard scored 14, Jessica Miles 10, Dasha Adams and Krystal Baker, six each; and Kristina Trigg two.

Pearl River and Holmes split in previous meetings played Nov. 5 in Poplarville with HCC’s women defeating PRCC 54-51 and PRCC’s men dropping HCC 72-58.

After a week-long Thanksgiving holiday break, The River returns to action when it hits the road for Baton Rouge CC in Baton Rouge, La., Monday, Nov. 26, for contests at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) before opening MACJC South Division action Thursday, Nov. 29, when Hinds visits Shivers Gym in Poplarville for contests at the same game times.
