River splits with Gulf Coast

            POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River split with Mississippi Gulf Coast here Wednesday in MACJC South Division softball action, winning the first game of the doubleheader 3-2 before falling 9-2 in the nightcap game.
            The host Lady Wildcats are now 22-12 overall and 16-6 in division play, while the visiting Lady Bulldogs are 26-15 and 13-9.
            In the first game, Gulf Coast went up 1-0 in the top of the first, but Pearl River managed to tie it up in the bottom of the second before taking a 3-1 lead in the third off three straight doubles by Heather Boutwell of Oak Grove High, Kaci Lantrip of Terry High, and Rachel Hickman of Poplarville High.
            The Lady Bulldogs managed a solo run in the sixth.
            Starter Hickman (14-5) picked up the win in going the distance, giving up five hits, striking out five, walking two, and hitting a batter, while MGCCC starter Emily Davis (0-1) got the loss in her two-and-two-thirds innings of work. She gave up six hits and walked one before Elise Richardson relieved in the third, going three-and-a-third, giving up two hits, striking out two, and walking one.
            Britney Butler paced Gulf Coast’s five-hit effort with three singles, while Cocoa Bender and Davis both had base hits. Dani Craft and Richardson had RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs.
            PRCC finished with eight hits, led by Lantrip’s double and single (one RBI), while Hannah Holloway of Petal High had two base hits, Boutwell and Hickman (one RBI) both doubled, and Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High and Courtney Warr of Theodore (Ala.) High both singled. Allie Flint of Madison Central High had an RBI for the Lady Wildcats.
            Pearl River committed two errors in the game to Gulf Coast’s one.
            In the nightcap, things were scoreless for the first two frames before the Lady Bulldogs took a 1-0 edge in the top of the third. After a scoreless fourth, Gulf Coast added four in the fifth and four in the sixth, while Pearl River answered with solo runs in both innings.
            Starter Paige Breal (5-1) got the win in going the distance, giving up six hits, striking out five, and walking one, while PRCC starter Warr (3-2) got the loss. She went four-and-a-third, gave up seven hits, and struck out two, before Hickman relieved in the fifth and went one-and-two-thirds. She gave up six hits, struck out one, and hit a batter. Shelby Perry pitched the seventh, walking a batter.
            Bender paced the Lady Bulldogs’ 13-hit attack with three singles (one RBI), while Davis homered and singled (three RBIs), Craft (two RBIs), Cat Campbell, and Brooke Gaston (one RBI) had two singles apiece, and Butler and Ashley Hickman (one RBI) both had base hits.
            Pearl River finished with six hits, led by Boutwell with a sixth-inning home run (one RBI), while Hickman and Holloway (one RBI) both doubled and Flint, Lantrip, and Warr singled.
            Both teams played error free in the game.
Pearl River split with Gulf Coast in a previous doubleheader played March 12 in Perkinston with PRCC falling 1-0 in the opening game before bouncing back with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap game.
The Lady Wildcats return to action Friday when they travel to sixth-ranked and South Division leader Jones County in Ellisville for a 4 p.m. doubleheader before traveling to division foe Copiah-Lincoln in Wesson on Monday for a 3 p.m. twin bill.
