River splits at East Miss

            SCOOBA — Pearl River split with East Mississippi in MACJC non-division baseball action here Sunday with the host Lions nipping the Wildcats 6-5 in the first game before getting bombarded 13-0 in six innings in the nightcap.
            PRCC improved to 8-2 overall with the win, while EMCC dropped to 7-5.
            In the opening game, East Miss held Pearl River scoreless for the first three innings while scoring two in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 advantage after three.
            The Wildcats responded with a solo run in the top of the third, then cut the Lions’ lead to 5-4 with three in the fourth. EMCC padded its lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth, while PRCC added its final run in the top of the eighth.
            Starter Smokey Ethridge (1-0) got the win, while K.C. Abney and Brock McKnight (save) saw relief duty.
            River starter Phillip Chandler (1-1) out of Stone County High got the loss, while Anthony Lusco of Bay High, Bradley Rayborn of Purvis High, Bubba Stockstill of Pearl River Central High, and Cameron Reynolds of Gulfport High were relievers.
            Pearl River finished with eight hits over the nine-inning distance, led by Forrest Dungan of Columbia High (one RBI) and Derek Martin of Poplarville High with a double each. Darius Knight of Pearl High had two RBIs, while Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High and Braxton Lee of Picayune High had an RBI each.
            Austin Braddock (two RBIs) and Chase Reeves paced East Mississippi’s 12-hit effort with each belting a double, while LaDarious Clark, Drew Standland, and Josh Tentoni had RBIs.
`          The Wildcats committed four errors in the contest to the Lions’ two.
            In the nightcap game, The River unloaded early with two runs in the top of the first and second frames before adding solo runs in the third and fourth innings to go up 5-0.
            After a scoreless fifth, the Wildcats scored a whopping seven runs in the top of the sixth. The Lions zilched in the bottom of the frame and PRCC was the winner via the 10-run rule.
            Starter Jake Brumfield (1-0) out of Adam Christian Academy in Natchez picked up his first collegiate victory in going the distance, while EMCC starter Dillon Hawkins (0-3) got the loss. Corbin Johnson, Blake Thomas, and Colby Ramey saw relief duty for the Lions.
            Paul Pickerrell out of John Hardin High in Elizabethtown, Ky., paced the Wildcats’ whopping 17-hit attack with two doubles (one RBI); while Darius Knight of Pearl High (three RBIs), Lee (four RBIs), and Martin all had doubles. Joe Kirkland of Moss Point High, Andrew Wilkes of Pearl High, and Krisjon Wilkerson of St. Stanislaus all had RBIs.
            East Miss finished with four hits, led by Jake Upton’s double.
`          Both teams played error-free.
            Pearl River travels to MACJC non-division foe Mississippi Delta in Moorhead Tuesday for a 12 noon doubleheader before making a two-game stand at Hinds CC in Raymond Sunday, March 3, against Triton (Ill.) at 2 p.m. and Meridian at 6 p.m.
