River splits at Delta

             MOORHEAD --- Pearl River Community College split with Mississippi Delta here Thursday in women’s and men’s MACJC non-division basketball action.
            The Lady Wildcats were nipped by the host Lady Trojans 66-64, while the Wildcats prevailed with a 66-54 victory. PRCC’s women evened their overall record to 1-1, while its men remain unbeaten at 4-0. Both MDCC squads dropped to 3-2.
            In the women’s game, Delta led 33-29 at the intermission, but Pearl River’s 35-33 scoring advantage in the second half wasn’t quite enough for victory.
            Deandra Darjean, a Prairie View A&M transfer from Houston, Tex., led the Lady ‘Cats with a game-high 19 points (nine rebounds, two treys), while Shanta’ Echols of Sumrall High scored 14 and hauled in a game-high 13 boards. Kalisha Washington out of Murrah High in Jackson added 11 (six rebounds), Essence Pulliam out of Forest Hill High in Jackson 11 (seven rebounds), Kaci Sisson of Quitman High seven, and Vamikka Smith out of Murphy High in Mobile, Ala., two (five rebounds).
            Ashanti Spencer’s 17 points topped Delta’s scorers, while Krystal Nailer added 13, Niya Head 10, Mary Washington eight, Aqueshia Kimble six, India Overstreet four, Jasmine Joyner three, and Marie McGee and Kalehsa Williams, two each.
            In the men’s game, the Wildcats held on to a commanding 34-18 lead at the break, while the Trojans outscored PRCC 36-32 in the second half only to come up 13 points shy of victory.
            Southeastern Louisiana signee DeAngelo Coleman of South Pike High paced The River with a game-high 16 points (seven assists, two treys), while Kaven Bernard out of Assumption High in Napoleonville, La., added 14, Troy State signee Jeremy Hollimon of Gulfport High 12 (two treys), Bryant McGee of West Marion High eight (six rebounds), Irishma Bowie of Morton High six (two treys), Lester Crosby of Franklinton (La.) High five, Devontai Foye of Hattiesburg High four, and Louisiana-Monroe signee Rakeem Esco of Canton High one (five assists).
            PRCC and MDCC eye women’s and men’s rematches Thursday, Jan. 9, in Poplarville.
            Pearl River returns to action Monday, Nov. 18, when MACJC non-division foe Holmes CC plays host in Goodman with 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men) contests before the men's team plays host to Baton Rouge (La.) Thursday, Nov. 18, in Shivers Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
