River splits at Delgado

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Pearl River Community College split with Delgado here Thursday in NJCAA men’s and women’s basketball action with the Wildcats taking a 71-57 victory over the host Dolphins, while the Lady Wildcats fell 46-42 for their second straight setback.

Through three games, PRCC’s men remain unbeaten at 3-0, while its women are 1-2. DCC’s men dropped to 2-2, while its women are now 1-2.

In the men’s game, Pearl River led 37-32 at the break before outscoring Delgado 34-25 in the second half to take the double-digit win.

Kaven Breland out of Assumption High in Napoleonville, La., paced the Wildcats with 17 points and seven rebounds — both team-high totals — while Xavian Rimmer, an Alcorn State transfer who prepped at Piney Woods School near Jackson, added 13; Frank Snow, an Angelina JC (Tex.) transfer who prepped at Sagemont High in Wellington, Fla., 10; U.S. Air Force Academy transfer Daniel Grieves who prepped at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, nine; Devontai Foye of Hattiesburg High five, Josh Carpenter of Oak Grove High and Jeremy Hollimon of Gulfport High, four each; Demondre Harvey of Minden (La.) High three (six rebounds), DeAngelo Coleman out of South Pike High in Magnolia and Marcus Hogan out of Provine High in Jackson, two each; and Rakeem Esco of Canton High and Derionne Stewart of Picayune High, one each.

Deonta Ward led the Dolphins with 17 pionts, while Patrick Gales added 14 (six rebounds), Melvin Davis 13, Brian Elphage eight, Jamion Gray four, Quinton Breland three, and Tyson Magee two.

In the women’s game, things were deadlocked at 18-18 at the intermission, but the Lady Dolphins out-pointed the Lady Wildcats 28-24 in the second half to take their first victory of the 2012-2013 season.

Valescia Dixon of East Marion High led PRCC with 10 points and a whopping 15 boards — team-high and game-high totals, respectively — while Lolecia Richardson out of Provine High in Jackson added a season-high 10, Chaquita McGee of Yazoo City High nine, Daiquari Raine of Poplarville High six (eight rebounds), Francheska Bowman out of Choctaw High in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., four; Coutney Osler of Puckett high and Kalisha Washington out of Murrah High in Jackson, three each; Jeronda Beason of Poplarville High and Mia Coleman of Mendenhall High, two each; and Wisdom James of Durant High, one.

Pearl River and Delgado eye rematches Thursday, Dec. 6, in Poplarville at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men).

PRCC returns to action Monday when MACJC non-division opponent Mississippi Delta visits Shivers Gym for contests at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) before hitting the road for MACJC non-division foe Holmes in Goodman Thursday, Nov. 15, for women’s and men’s games at the same game times.
