River splits in day two of Flag City Juco Classic

MILLINGTON, Tenn. --- Pearl River’s Wildcats split in their final day of action of the Flag City Junior College Classic here Tuesday, falling to Southwest Tennessee 9-4 before rebounding with a lopsided 8-2 victory over Ellsworth (Ia.) in renowned USA Stadium.
PRCC ends its road trip at 8-2 overall.
Against Memphis-based SWT, the Saluqis went up 3-0 with a solo run in the bottom of the second and two more in the third, while the Wildcats scored their first run in the top of the fourth.
Southwest Tennessee answered with two more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to make it 9-1 before The River scored the game’s final three runs in the seventh frame.
Starter Chad Collin (1-0) got the win in his four innings on the mound, giving up three hits and striking out four, while Evan Fanton pitched two innings of relief, giving up two hits, striking out one, and walking one. Jonathan Williams also saw an inning of relief duty.
Adam Turney out of Oak Hill Academy in West Point (0-1) got the loss in his two-and-a-third innings of action, giving up three hits, striking out two, and walking three, while Trey Grice of Forrest County AHS pitched two-thirds of an inning of relief, giving up a hit, striking out one, and walking one. Zach O’Hern of Hancock County High saw three innings of relief duty, giving up five hits, striking out two, and walking one.
Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High paced the Wildcats’ five-hit effort with a triple (two RBIs), while Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High, Kreg Garner of Northwest Rankin High, Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High, and Derek Martin of Poplarville High all had base hits.
Anthony Stricklin homered and blasted two singles (one RBI) to pace the Saluqis’ nine-hit attack, while Michael Halley (two RBIs), Dylan Moore (one RBI), and Sam Seaton (two RBIs) all doubled. Evan Fantom, Seth McLemore, and Cade Smith all had base hits for SWT.
Each team committed three errors in the game.
Against Ellsworth out of Iowa Falls, Ia., Pearl River jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first and two in the second, while the Panthers scored their only two runs of the contest in the top of the fourth. The Wildcats scored the game’s final three runs in the sixth.
Jacob Taylor of Picayune High (1-0) got the win in his three-and-a-third innings of action, giving up three hits, striking out four, and walking five, while Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High saw an inning and two-thirds of relief duty, giving up a hit and striking out two. Ohio State transfer Luke McGee out of Wooster (Oh.) High pitched two innings of relief, giving up a hit and striking out two.
Ellsworth finished with five hits. Brian Diaz, Conner Grant, Sean Hennen (one RBI), Ryan Jantsch, and Matt Olsen all singled.
Anthony (one RBI), O’Hern (one RBI), and Mount paced the Wildcats’ nine-hit attack with two singles apiece, while Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High, Garner (one RBI), and Haskin all had base hits.
Each team committed one error in the game.
Pearl River returns to action Sunday when it travels to Holmes CC in Goodman to play Mineral Area CC (Mo.) at 3 p.m. and the host Bulldogs at 6 p.m. before traveling to LSU-Eunice in Eunice, La., for a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
