River cans Meridian

            MERIDIAN --- Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats pulled off their third straight MACJC South Division doubleheader sweep here Saturday, downing Meridian CC 10-4 and 9-0 (five innings).
            Saturday’s victories made it a clean sweep of MCC in 2014 for The River, as the Lady ’Cats bombed the Lady Eagles in a previous twin bill played March 7 in Poplarville by 8-0 (six innings) and 9-1 (5.2 innings) scores to open its South Division schedule.
            PRCC improved to 21-11 overall and 15-5 in division play, while Meridian dropped to 2-29 and 1-19.
            In the first game, the Lady Wildcats went up 4-0 in the top of the second inning before both teams added solo runs in the fourth and fifth frames. The Lady Eagles pulled to within two with a pair of runs in the sixth, but PRCC’s four in the top of the seventh ended the scoring.
            Rachel Hickman of Poplarville High (12-5) got the win in pitching the distance, giving up nine hits, striking out eight, walking three, and hitting a batter, while Lyndsey Cannon (1-3) got the loss. She also went the distance, giving up 14 hits, striking out three, walking one, and hitting three batters.
            Kaci Lantrip of Terry High paced PRCC at the plate with a home run and two singles (one RBI), while Megan Scronce of Petal High (three RBIs) and Courtney Warr of Theodore (Ala.) High (two RBIs) both doubled and singled. Heather Boutwell of Oak Grove High (two RBIs) and Hannah Holloway of Petal High (two RBIs) had two base hits each, while Allie Flint of Madison Central High, Emily Jackson Theodore (Ala.) High, and Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High all singled.
            Casey Bolton led the Lady Eagles with a double and two singles (two RBIs), while Chelsea Moore had three base hits, Kenya Harris doubled (one RBI), and Paige Gipson (one RBI) and Lacey Hedrick both had singles. Paige Bowser had an RBI for MCC.
            Each team committed an error in the contest.
            The nightcap came went only five innings via the eight-run rule. Pearl River went up 4-0 in the top of the second, then added five in the fourth to end the scoring.
            Warr (3-1) got the win in going the five-inning distance, giving up three hits and striking out four, while starter Kelsey Rogers (0-9) got the loss in her four innings on the mound. She gave up nine hits before Hedrick relieved in the fifth, walking one batter.
            Warr helped the winning cause by leading the Lady Wildcats at the plate with a double and two singles (one RBI), while Boutwell (one RBI), Holloway, Jackson (one RBI), Lewis (two RBIs), Brooke Roberts out of St. Amant High in Gonzales, La. (one RBI), and Scronce (two RBIs) all had base hits. Lantrip had an RBI for PRCC.
            All of Meridian’s hits were singles with Shelby Peavey cracking two and Harris one.
            The Lady Eagles committed three errors in the game to the Lady Wildcats’ none.
            Pearl River returns to action when it hosts division rival Mississippi Gulf Coast Tuesday (3 p.m. doubleheader) before traveling to division foe Jones County Friday (4 p.m. doubleheader).
