Pearl River Community College made it interesting in the final half-inning of both games, but managed to hold on for a sweep of a softball doubleheader Saturday at Alabama Southern.
In the opener, PRCC let all but one run of a 7-1 leave get away, but still came away with a 7-6 victory. In the nightcap, the Wildcats built a 6-0 lead and that was enough for a 7-5 win to complete the sweep.
The victory in the second game was No. 300 for Wildcat head coach Leigh White, now in her 15th season at PRCC.
Pearl River will head into MACJC play next week with an 8-4 overall record. Alabama Southern dropped to 2-22.
The Wildcats wasted no time in getting their offense started in the first game, loading the bases in the top of the first inning before getting a run across on an error, followed by an RBI single from Katie Perry.
PRCC made it 7-1 with a five-run rally in the top of the fourth, getting a two-run single by Bailey Street, a two-run double by Rylee Dawsey and another RBI single from Perry.
The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the fourth off Wildcat starter Krista Robles (3-1), then scored four times in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Olivia Holley, capped by a two-run triple by Audrey Lindsey with just one out.
But Holley got a groundout to third and a groundout to shortstop to keep the tying run at third base and preserve the win.
Pearl River got off to a similar fast start in the second game, scoring a run in the top of the first and five in the second.
Ilyssa Easton drew a walk to open the game. She stole second base, took third on a passed ball and scored on Brooke Barnes groundout to shortstop.
Easton drove in the first run in the Wildcats’ second-inning outburst with a single. Robles and Kiersten Stanford each had two-run doubles to build the margin to 6-0.
PRCC starter Jackie Shows (3-2) was nicked for single tallies in the third and fifth innings, then got in trouble in the bottom of the seventh after two were out.
An error kept the inning alive, then Heather Irons smacked a two-run home run, bringing left-hander Madison Scoggin in from the bullpen. Another error put a runner on base, and Lindsey drove the run home with a double.
But Scoggin nailed down the save by getting a groundout to end the game.
Pearl River will be at home to open conference play with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday against fifth-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast.
