Pearl River remains unbeaten with sweep over Baton Rouge

            VIDALIA, La. --- The Pearl River Community College baseball Wildcats remain unbeaten after sweeping Baton Rouge CC (La.) here Saturday with 4-1, 9-1 victories in the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex.
            PRCC improved to 4-0 on the year, while BRCC remains winless at 0-7.
            In the first game, things remained scores for the first two-and-a-half innings before the Wildcats took a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the third. The River added another run in the sixth and two in the eighth, while the Bears scored its only run in the top of the ninth.
            Starter Brandon Pennington of Sumrall High (1-0) picked up the win in his six innings of no-hit duty, striking out nine and walking three, while Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High relieved in the seventh, pitching two frames, giving up two hits, and hitting a batter. Zach O’Hern of Hancock County High closed it out in the ninth, giving up two hits.
            Starter Kelby Blalock (0-1) got the loss, pitching four innings, giving up two hits, striking out two, and walking two, while Andrew Shirley relieved in the fifth, hurling two frames, giving up three hits, and walking one. Jacob Saizan relieved in the seventh and went one-and-two-thirds, giving up two hits, striking out one, and walking one, while Melvin Frazier pitched the last two outs of the eight.
            Corey Free (one RBI) and Benjamin McGrew both doubled to lead the Bears’ four-hit effort, while Cameron Burns and Austin Vicknair both singled.
            Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High paced the Wildcats’ seven-hit attack with a double and a single (one RBI), while Kyle Dolan of Forrest County AHS, Tracy Hadley of Pascagoula High, Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High, Nathan Pugh of Starkville High, and Jacob Taylor of Picayune High all had base hits.
            Pearl River played error-free, while Baton Rouge committed one defensive miscue.
            In the nightcap game, PRCC went up 2-0 in the top of the first and added a solo run in the third before blowing it open with six in the seventh to make it 9-0. BRCC scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh.
            Starter Philip Chandler of Stone County High (1-0) picked up the win in his four innings of action, giving up four hits, striking out four, and walking one, while Taylor relieved in the fifth and tossed the final three frames. He gave up three hits, struck out four, and walked one.
            Bear starter Mason Liles (0-1) got the loss, going four innings, giving up five hits, and striking out three, while Ben Falgout pitched the fifth and sixth, giving up a hit, striking out two, and walking one. Brodie Browning pitched the first third of the seven, giving up three hits and striking out one, while Thomas Neef pitched the final two outs of the seventh, giving up a hit.
            Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High led the Wildcats’ 10-hit effort with three singles, while Anthony doubled and single, Houston Davenport out of Thompson High in Birmingham, Ala. (two RBIs), Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High (two RBIs), O’Hern, Pugh (one RBI), and Taylor (two RBIs) all had base hits.
BRCC finished with five hits off singles by Cameron Burns, Steven Bright (one RBI), Free, McGrew, and Zachary Zimmer.
Both teams played error-free.
            Pearl River returns to action Friday when it hosts MACJC non-division rival Mississippi Delta in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
