POPLARVILLE — The ninth-ranked and South Division champion Pearl River Wildcats host North No. 4 Itawamba in one of four MACJC best-of-three playoff series this weekend to decide one of four berths in the upcoming state tournament set May 10-12.
The Wildcats, the South’s top seed at 36-10 overall and 19-5 in division play, wrapped its regular season last Saturday with a 9-0, 8-5 doubleheader sweep over Southwest Mississippi in Summit to clinch the South Division’s regular-season title.
PRCC, under third-year head coach Josh Hoffpauir, ended its regular season with an impressive 11-game winning streak, including a 17-3 mark in its final 20 division contests. The Wildcats swept the last five division opponents they faced.
ICC, under 10th-year head coach Rick Collier, started the 2013 losing eight of its first 13 games before rebounding to finish 23-21 and 13-11 — good enough for the North’s fourth seed.
The first game of the series starts at 6 p.m. Saturday in Wildcat Stadium with a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday. Should a third game be necessary, that game will start at 5:30 p.m.
The series was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but was moved to Saturday and Sunday due to wet field conditions.
The other three series include:
- North No. 1 Northeast Mississippi hosting South No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast in Boonville (Friday 2 p.m., Saturday 12 noon and 3:30 p.m. if necessary).
- North No. 2 Northwest Mississippi hosting South No. 3 Jones County in Senatobia (Friday 6 p.m., Saturday 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. if necessary).
- South No. 2 East Central hosting North No. 3 Mississippi Delta in Decatur (Friday 4 p.m., Saturday 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. if necessary).
