Wildcats down Southwest 2-1 in dramatic fashion

Pearl River Community College needed a little extra time to complete a sweep of Southwest Mississippi in MACJC South Division soccer action Friday night at the PRCC Sports Complex.

Jackson Turner (Leakesville) fired in the game-winning goal four minutes into overtime to power the Wildcats to a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Bears.

Turner helped Pearl River (3-2 overall, 2-1 in division) overcome a 1-0 deficit after Jaime Delor put Southwest (4-2, 1-2) ahead on a penalty kick early in the second half.

Wildcats drop season opener to Itawamba 5-2.

The Pearl River Community College men suffered a 5-2 setback to Itawamba in the 2016 regular-season opener Saturday at the PRCC Sports Complex. 

The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead at 26:18, when Jackson Turner headed in a corner kick from Junior Sanchez.

It was a costly score, however, as Turner and Itawamba defender Bryce Hunt collided on the play. Both players had to leave the game to receive stitches and did not return.

Wildcats drop 2-1 decision to Holmes in exhibition

The Pearl River Community College men's soccer team fell short Tuesday afternoon in a 2-1 defeat to Holmes in an exhibition contest at the PRCC Sports Complex.
Holmes got both of its goals within a two-minute span late in the first half. Luis Lopez opened the scoring on a crossing pass from David Born, and the Bulldogs added to their lead on a goal by Ramon Barcenas, on an assist from Cristian Macias.

PRCC soccer teams welcome signing Class of 2016

POPLARVILLE – The championship soccer programs at Pearl River Community College celebrated their 2016 signing class Thursday night with a Media Day event at Crosby Hall on the PRCC campus.

A group of 11 signees, out of 13 total, were in attendance to show their support for the Lady Wildcat program, while nine of 10 signees for the Wildcat men were there.

“Well, we’ll have some depth, where we didn’t last season,” said veteran Lady Wildcat coach Jack Byrd, whose teams are 114-16-6 in his nine seasons at the helm.

Gallant approved as PRCC men’s soccer coach

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College has announced the addition of former Wildcat standout Drew Gallant as new men’s soccer coach.

Gallant’s hiring was approved by the Pearl River Board of Trustees at its December meeting on Tuesday.

“I am ecstatic,” said Gallant. “It’s great to be back.”

Gallant replaces Paul Martin, who resigned in September for personal reasons after seven seasons as head coach. PRCC women’s coach Jack Byrd guided the Wildcats following Martin’s departure.

PRCC soccer stars close careers with multiple honors

POPLARVILLE – Several Pearl River Community College soccer standouts completed their junior college careers this past weekend, earning a number of honors in the process.
Sophomores Lyndsey Lee of Picayune and Chance Bourdene of Flowood were South Most Valuable Player for their respective teams this past weekend at the third annual MACJC All-Star Game at Ridgeland.
The North women won 2-1 over the South, while the South men were 5-3 winners over the North.

Lee, Fortenberry named to women’s soccer All-Region 23 Team

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College sophomores Lyndsey Lee and Sarah Fortenberry were named to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Team, announced Thursday.

Lee, a midfielder from Picayune who played for Our Lady Academy, was the top vote-getter in polling of coaches in the MACJC/Region 23, with a record 104 points. Fortenberry, a former Forrest County AHS standout from Hattiesburg, was third in the voting with 77.

Pearl River trio named to men’s soccer All-Region 23 Team

POPLARVILLE – Three members of the Pearl River Community College men’s soccer team were selected to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Team, announced Monday by the MACJC.
Forwards Chance Bourdene and Romar Smith were chosen from the four-time MACJC state champion Wildcats, along with goalkeeper Grant Adam.
Bourdene, a sophomore from Northwest Rankin who was voted as team captain at the start of the season, tallied 11 goals and 11 assists. Smith, a sophomore from Gulfport, led the Wildcats with 13 goals and had seven assists.
