Lady Wildcats manage 1-1 draw with Gulf Coast

Pearl River Community College wasn’t at its best in women’s soccer Tuesday night, but the Lady Wildcats managed to avoid defeat in a 1-1 draw with Mississippi Gulf Coast in a South Division game at Perkinston.

The Lady Wildcats (2-0-1, 1-0-1 in South Division) trailed 1-0 at halftime, but tied it up on Caroline Grafe’s second-half goal, and the two teams played the rest of the second half and two 10-minute overtimes without scoring again.

Gulf Coast (2-2-1, 0-1-1) drew first blood at 32:02 in the first half, and highlighted a strong defensive effort by the Lady Bulldogs that did not allow PRCC a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Pearl River got the equalizer just over eight minutes into the second half when Grafe (Kiln) fired a high arcing shot from 30 yards out on the far left side of the goal that sailed over the head of the MGCCC keeper and into the net.

Both teams played most of the second half with just 10 players on the field, after each team received a red card.

Erin Longsden of Gulf Coast was ejected at 56:08 for a dangerous play on Lady Wildcat keeper Karsen Gildea (Ocean Springs) to give PRCC a man advantage.

However, it lasted just eight minutes, when Anna Grace Cooley (Lucedale) was sent off for Pearl River at 64:13 after receiving a second yellow card in the game.

The Lady Wildcats will take a weekend road trip this week, traveling to Clinton to face Mississippi College on Saturday, then heading up to Memphis, Tenn., to battle Southwest Tennessee on Sunday. Both games are 2 p.m. kickoffs.
