Pearl River Community College passed its toughest test of the season thus far Thursday night, knocking off previously undefeated Southwest 74-60 in women’s basketball action at M.R. White Coliseum.
The Lady Wildcats (8-1 overall) evened their South Division record at 1-1; Southwest dropped to 10-1 and 1-1.
It was another stellar outing for redshirt freshman Rehema Franklin (New Orleans), who finished with 20 points to lead PRCC.
Franklin’s 3-point shot from the top of the key with 2:14 to play in the third quarter gave Pearl River the lead for good at 44-41, and the Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Bears 26-16 in the final period to win going away.
The Lady Wildcats shot 55 percent from the field in the first half (15 of 27), and led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, after Franklin capped an 11-3 run with another 3-pointer. PRCC led 35-29 at halftime.
Southwest opened the second half on a 9-0 run to lead by three, 38-35, before the Lady Wildcats regained command.
Freshman Adyn Strickland (Saucier) added 17 points and 14 rebounds, with 12 of her points coming in the fourth quarter. Freshman Tyasia Willis (Camden) had a season-high 14 rebounds for PRCC.
The Lady Wildcats won’t have much time to celebrate their big victory as they must prepare for the first Cat Fight of the season, as Jones County comes to Poplarville at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the next action for Pearl River.
