Lady Wildcats falter in second half against Co-Lin

Through the first half and into the third quarter, Pearl River Community College in the game against Copiah-Lincoln in the Lady Wildcats’ season finale, trailing by just three points to the postseason-bound Lady Wolves.

But that’s when Co-Lin kicked it into a higher gear, closing the third quarter with a 22-4 wave that swamped Pearl River, as the Lady Wolves handed PRCC a 70-45 defeat in women’s basketball action Thursday night at M.R. White Coliseum.

The Lady Wildcats completed their season 10-11 overall and 3-11 in the South Division. Co-Lin (19-3 and 12-2) finished second in the division and will face East Mississippi on Monday in the first round of the MACJC State Tournament at Ellisville.

Pearl River played a solid defensive game in the first half, holding the Lady Wolves to just 24 points. Co-Lin shot just 34.5 percent from the field (10 of 29), including just one 3-pointer, and was 3 of 6 from the foul line.

However, the Lady Wildcats couldn’t take advantage on the offensive end, mustering just 16 points on 6 of 28 shooting from the field.

Still, Deja Starks’ 3-point shot capped a 7-2 PRCC run early in the second half that closed the margin to 26-23.

And then the Lady Wolves started taking target practice. After missing two of their first four shots in the third quarter, Co-Lin hit 7 of 8 to close the period, and led 48-27.

In all, the Lady Wolves converted 18 of 25 shots from the field in the second half (72.0 percent).

Freshman Rehema Franklin was 4 of 7 from 3-point range, and finished with a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Wildcats. Freshman Adyn Strickland grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her 7 points. Karry Callahan led Co-Lin with 14 points.
