Pearl River Community College got a fierce battle from Southwest Mississippi Tuesday night, but the Lady Wildcats prevailed in a 2-1 victory in South Division women’s soccer action at the PRCC Sports Complex.
The win kept PRCC (4-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 division) undefeated heading into Friday’s showdown against Jones County. Southwest (2-4, 0-3) lost its fourth straight game.
Sophomore Sarah Walden (Pascagoula) knocked in a close-range shot off a pass from sophomore Mia Richardson (Pascagoula) for the game-winner at 75:30 to cap a second-half of dominance that saw Pearl River take 19 shots to just five for the Lady Bears.
Southwest got the scoring started less than nine minutes into the game on an unassisted goal by Auset Gibbs, but sophomore Lacey Polderman (Picayune) buried a perfect pass from sophomore Kayla Nobles (Hurley) at 16:14 to even the game.
PRCC played without starting goalkeeper Karsen Gildea, who suffered a concussion in Sunday’s win over Southwest Tennessee. After giving up the early goal, freshman back-up Mallorie Seal (Hattiesburg) settled down, thanks to a stifling defense that allowed just two shots on goal.
The Lady Wildcats will be will travel to Ellisville for the first of two soccer Cat Fights against the unbeaten Lady Bobcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
