Lady ‘Cats sweep Southwest in South Division openers

            SUMMIT --- Pearl River Community College’s Lady Wildcats opened their MACJC South Division softball schedule in grand fashion here Saturday with a sweep of Southwest Mississippi.
            PRCC shut out the host Lady Bears 3-0 in the first game of the doubleheader before pulling out a 6-5 victory in the nightcap. The Lady ’Cats improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in division play with the sweep, while SMCC dropped to 4-9 and 2-2.
            In the first game, things were scoreless for the first two innings, but The River scored two in the top of the third and followed with a solo run in the fourth to end the scoring.
            Rachel Hickman of Poplarville High (5-2) picked up the victory in going the distance, giving up five hits, striking out four and hitting a batter, while Madison Teague (1-1) was the losing pitcher. She also pitched the distance, giving up seen hits, striking out two, and walking two.
            Heather Boutwell of Oak Grove High paced the Lady Wildcats at the plate with a home run and a single (two RBIs), while Kaci Lantrip of Terry High homered (one RBI), and Rachel Breland of Poplarville High, Micah Davis of Poplarville High, Hanna Holloway of Petal High, and Emily Jackson of Theodore (Ala.) High all had base hits.
            Payton Lewis and Mary Margaret McLaurin paced the Lady Bears with two singles each, while Abigail Hall had a base hit.
            Both teams played error free in the contest.
            In the nightcap game, Pearl River went up 4-0 in the top of the first frame off a grand slam homer by Lantrip, then padded it lead with solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The Lady Wildcats staved off a SMCC five-run barrage in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-5 victory.
            Starter Ashley Hawkins of Theodore (Ala.) High (2-3) got the win in her five innings on the mound, giving up four hits and striking out two, while Hickman relieved in the sixth and closed it out. She gave up four hits and struck out two.
            Besides Lantrip’s grand slam dinger, she also doubled and singled, while Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High had two doubled (two RBIs) and Hawkins, Boutwell, Brooke Roberts out of Saint Amant High in Gonzales, La., and Megan Scronce of Petal High all had base hits.
            Harley Myers paced Southwest’s eight-hit attack with a double and two singles (one RBI), while Chelsea Nette had two base hits and Kristen Gekler, Hall, Lewis, McLaurin, and Jessica Pipkins all had singles.
            Again, both teams played error free.
Pearl River returns to action Tuesday when it hosts MACJC South Division rival Hinds Tuesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before division foe Meridian visits Lady Wildcat Stadium Friday for a 4 p.m. twin bill.
