Co-Lin sweeps River

Co-Lin sweeps River

Pearl River’s Dani Barton belts one of her two base hits in the Lady Wildcats’ nine-inning 7-3 loss POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River’s post-season softball aspirations took a downward slide here Monday.
Presently in fourth place in the MACJC South Division, the Lady Wildcats could’ve sealed a post-season playoff berth with at least a split with fifth-place Copiah-Lincoln, but it wasn’t to be. The visiting Lady Wolfpack pulled off a shocking 7-3 (nine innings), 9-1 (five innings) sweep over The River to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Slugger Jessica Crum accounted for all of Co-Lin’s runs in the opening game, belting a three-run homer in the fifth before crushing a grand slammer in the ninth, which clinched the victory.
PRCC’s fate now partially rests on its regular-season finale at division rival East Central Tuesday and CLCC’s division twin bill against Hinds in Wesson in its regular-season wrap up set for Wednesday.
If the Lady Wildcats pull off at least a split at Decatur, they’ll clinch fourth, while a Co-Lin split with HCC would eliminate the Lady Wolves and push Pearl River into the post season.
With Monday’s sweep, Pearl River dropped to 22-19 overall and 12-14 in division play, while Copiah-Lincoln improved to 16-18 and 10-16.
In the first game, the Lady Wildcats went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first when two batter Branda Northrop of Poplarville High drew a one-out walk and scored when three batter Hannah Holloway of Petal High reached on an error only to be nailed at second. Brooke Roberts of St. Amant (La.) High then singled to right and courtesy runner Shay Rosser of D’Iberville High stole second before Rachel Hickman of Poplarville High grounded out to second to end the inning.
The Lady Wolves loaded the bases in the third off a lead off a lead off single by Brittany Barbay and base hits by Brooke Laigast and Crum two outs later, but Breanna McKenzie flew to right for the final out.
With one out in the bottom of the frame, Breanna Herndon of Poplarville High and Northrop reached, but pitcher Kamry Creel retired Holloway and Roberts to end the inning.
Hickman and Briana Leonard of John Curtis Christian (La.) High led off the bottom of the fourth with base hits, but Dani Barton of Harrision Central High flew out to left before Whitney Smith of West Harrison High hit into a double play to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Savannah Johnston drew a one-out walk and Laigast singled to left field to set the stage for Crum’s three-run shot over the center field fence to make it 3-1 Co-Lin, but Pearl River answered in the bottom of the inning.
Mary Grace Key of Leake Academy got The River rolling with a line-drive lead off single to center and Breanna Herndon of Poplarville reached on an error. Northrop then loaded the bases when she reached on another error, setting the stage for Holloway’s RBI single with Northrop being thrown out at second. With runners at first and third, Herndon scored off Roberts’ sacrifice bunt to knot things at 3-3 before Hickman flew out to left center to end the inning.
Co-Lin left runners at first and second in the seventh, while Pearl River left one in the bottom of the frame before leaving runners at second and third in the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, lead off batters Adrienne Wallace and Johnston both reached on bunts before Laigast singled to left to load the corners. Crum followed with her grand slam to make it 7-3. Co-Lin managed to put two more runners on off a McKenzie single and a Kaitlyn Taylor walk two outs later, but Barbay popped up for the final out.
The Lady Wildcats went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning.
Creel (6-5) got the win in going the distance, giving up 10 hits and striking out two, while Hickman (9-9) picked up the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up 11 hits, striking out six, and walking four.
Besides Crum’s seven-RBI performance, Laigast had three singles, while Mattie Avants, Lauren Brashier, Johnston, Payton Sheffield, and Wallace all had base hits.
Barton and Leonard led Pearl River at the plate with two singles each, while Holloway doubled, and Herndon, Hickman, Key, Northrop, and Roberts (one RBI) all had base hits.
CLCC committed five errors in the game to PRCC’s two.
In the nightcap game, it was all Copiah-Lincoln. The Lady Wolfpack scored two in the first, one each in the second and third, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth, while the Lady Wildcats managed their only run in the second.
Lucy Lewis (3-6) got the mound win in going the five-inning distance, giving up four hits, striking out two, and walking two, while Skylar Cook (8-7) of St. Amant (La.) High got the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up 10 hits, striking out one, and walking six.
Laigast’s two doubles (one RBI) paced CLCC at the plate, while Wallace doubled and singled (one RBI), Sheffield had two base hits (one RBI), Lauren Brashier homered (four RBIs), and Barbay, McKenzie (one RBI),and Kaitlyn Taylor all singled.
Key’s RBI double led PRCC, while Herndon, Northrop, and Roberts all had base hits.
Pearl River committed three errors in the game to Co-Lin’s none.
Copiah-Lincoln swept Pearl River in an earlier doubleheader played March 23 in Wesson with 3-2 and 6-3 victories.
The Lady Wildcats’ Tuesday twin bill against East Central sees a 3 p.m. start in Decatur.
