Basketball Opens Season

POPLARVILLE – The Pearl River Community College basketball teams open the 2015-16 regular season on Monday against Delgado, La., at New Orleans.

The Wildcats return three starters and seven players total from last season’s 25-4 team that came within an overtime loss to Holmes of making it to the NJCAA National Tournament.

PRCC is the two-time defending MACJC State Tournament champions and come into the season ranked 12th in the nation in the NJCAA preseason rankings.

“I like my team,” said PRCC head coach Richard Mathis, who enters his 24th season as coach of the Wildcats. “If we get everybody back and on the same page, I think we’re going to have a successful year.”

Pearl River will be led this season by sophomores Darryln Willis and Cortez Mitchell. Mitchell was PRCC’s leading scorer last season, with 14.6 points per game, and Willis averaged 13.8 points and 7.1 rebounds.

The PRCC women will be under the direction of first-year coach Scotty Fletcher, formerly an assistant coach at William Carey University.

Fletcher’s first Lady Wildcats’ squad returns just three sophomores, led by Shaniqua Magee, who scored 9.9 points a game last season, when PRCC was 10-12.

“So far, they’ve been a joy to coach,” aid Fletcher. “They’re like sponges; they soak it up. They’re extremely coachable, they’re passionate and they want to be good.”

The Wildcats will play an exhibition game at home on Thursday against the Carey junior varsity, then the PRCC teams will make their home debut on Nov. 9 against Baton Rouge.
