River sweeps Triton

RAYMOND — The 10th-ranked Pearl River Wildcats swept the Triton College (Ill.) Trojans with 10-7 and 9-6 victories here Sunday in the Wes Cliburn Tournament played on the Hinds Community College campus.
            PRCC improved to 11-3 overall with the wins, while TC, located in River Grove, Ill., remains winless at 0-8.
            In the first games, the first two innings were scoreless, but both squads scored two runs each in the third. Pearl River’s offense blew it open in the top of the fourth with a five-run barrage to go up 7-2.
            The Trojans added a solo run in the bottom of the fifth, while PRCC scored its final two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 10-3. Triton added two in the bottom of the frame and its final two runs in the seventh.
            Nicholls State (La.) signee Ryan Deemes (1-1) out of Holy Cross High in Chalmette, La., got the win after relieving starter Joe Kirkland of Moss Point High. Bubba Stockstill of Pearl River Central High, Bradley Rayborn of Purvis High, Phillip Chandler of Stone County High, and Brandon Fry out of Nease High in Jacksonville, Fla., also saw relief duty. Fry got the save.
            Starter Corey Duckworth (0-2) got the loss, while Carlos Castillo relieved.
            Neither team had any multiple-base hits, but Pearl River finished with a total of 10 base hits to Triton’s four. PRCC’s Krisjon Wilkerson out of St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis had four RBIs, Braxton Lee of Picayune High two RBIs, and Forrest Dungan of Columbia High, Darius Knight of Pearl River, Derek Martin of Poplarville High, and Paul Pickerrell out of John Hardin High in Elizabethtown, Ky., all had one RBI a piece.
            Justin Bard, Johnny Carson, Keil Conway, Andrew Godbold, and Otis Pygmon had RBIs for the Trojans.
            Pearl River committed one error in the game to Triton’s none.
            In the second game, TC went up 5-0 in the top of the first before PRCC answered with three in the bottom of the frame. The River tied it up at 5-5 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second before taking the lead for good with three in the bottom of the fourth.
            The Trojans added their final run in the top of the fifth, while Pearl River added a solo run in the bottom of the sixth.
            Starter Jake Brumfield (2-0) out of Adams Christian Academy in Natchez got the win, while Anthony Lusco of Bay High and Cameron Reynolds of Gulfport High saw relief duty.
            Trojan starter Zach Sciaccotta (0-2) got the loss, while Chris Rivera relieved.
            Triton finished with eight hits — no multiple-base hits — while Jorge Mora and Jose Miramontes had two RBIs each. Fred Hurraide also had an RBI.
            Carlos Gonzales paced the Wildcats’ seven-hit effort with a double (two RBIs), while Dungan had three RBIs, Wilkerson two RBIs, and Pickerrell one RBI.
            Pearl River returns to action with it hosts St. Louis Meramec (Mo.) Saturday, March 9, in a 1 p.m. contest before playing Marion Military (Ala.) at 6 p.m. in Wildcat Stadium. Illinois Central (Ill.) visits Sunday, March 10, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
