River splits with Perk

            POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College split with arch-rival Mississippi Gulf Coast in women’s and men’s MACJC South Division soccer action here Tuesday with the Lady Wildcats taking an impressive 4-0 victory, while the Wildcats fell 1-0 off a second-half free kick.
            PRCC’s women improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in division play, while its men are now 2-3 and 1-1. MGCCC’s women are now 1-3 land 1-1, while its men are 2-2 and 2-0.
            In the women’s game, Karly Mitchell of Poplarville High put the Lady Wildcats on the scoreboard with a goal at the 42:53 mark of the first half befor The River padded its lead with an own goal. Christina Gentry of Horn Lake High made it 3-0 with 27:47 left in the half.
Gulf Coast’s Shannon Blailock had a scoring opportunity with a penalty kick with 7:30 left before the break, while Rachel Jacobson of Pascagoula scored the game’s final goal off an assist by Hollie Jackson of Biloxi High with just under three minutes left before the intermission.
The two teams battled to a scoreless stalemate in the second half.
The men’s game was delayed for some 45 minutes due to lightning and rain. The first half was scoreless, but Gulf Coast’s Ethan Paschal of Poplarville High scored the game-winning goal off a free kick in the 70th minute.
Pearl River returns to MACJC South Division action when Copiah-Lincoln visits Saturday for 1 p.m. (women) and 3 p.m. (men) games before division foe Southwest Mississippi plays host in Summit Wednesday for 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men) match ups.
