POPLARVILLE — Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats will take on Itawamba’s Lady Indians at 2 p.m. Sunday in opening-round action of the MACJC State Softball Tournament at South Division champ Mississippi Gulf Coast CC in Perkinston.
The tournament was originally scheduled for Thursday and Friday, but was rescheduled for Saturday and Sunday due to the forecast of rainy conditions before being rescheduled for a second time for Sunday and Monday due to wet field conditions.
ICC (31-12) secured the North’s top seed via its 8-0, 3-0 doubleheader sweep over now-No. 2 East Mississippi (24-18) Monday in Fulton. PRCC (24-20) is the South Division’s No. 4 seed behind No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast (31-8), No. 2 Jones County (36-6), and No. 3 East Central (30-14).
Holmes (19-25) is the North’s No. 3 seed followed by No. 4 Northeast Mississippi (23-14).
The Lady Wildcats faced only two of the tournament’s North representatives during the regular season, boasting a combined 6-0 mark against East Miss and Holmes. PRCC swept Holmes with 8-0 and 14-2 victories in Goodman, while defeating East Mississippi 5-4 and 10-2 at Scooba and 9-1 and 7-6 in Poplarville.
Gulf Coast swept in both of its doubleheaders with The River, taking 10-2 and 7-3 wins in Perkinston and 8-0 and 6-5 victories in Poplarville.
The Lady Wildcats split their twin bills with East Central and Jones County.
JCJC defeated PRCC 8-0 in Ellisville before the Lady Wildcats rebounded with a 6-5 win in the nightcap game, while Pearl River was a 10-9 winner and 16-6 loser in Poplarville.
The River defeated East Central 6-1 in Poplarville before falling 5-1 in the nightcap, while the Lady Wildcats were 8-6 winners and 5-0 losers in Decatur.
Gulf Coast and Jones County are ranked No. 7 and No. 8, respectively, in the latest NJCAA Division II poll; while Itawamba and East Mississippi received votes in the balloting.
