PRCC splits at Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. — Pearl River Community College split with Baton Rouge (La.) in men’s and women’s basketball action here Monday with the Lady Wildcats suffering a lopsided 63-41 defeat, while the Wildcat squad were 62-60 winners over the host Bears.

PRCC’s women dropped to 2-4 overall, while its men improved to 5-1. BRCC’s women are now 4-2, while its men are 3-7.

In the women’s game, the Lady Bears led 41-30 at the intermission before outscoring The River 22-11 in the second half to take the 22-point victory.

Jersona Beason of Poplarville High (six rebounds) and Kalisha Washington out of Murrah High in Jackson led the Lady Wildcats with 10 points each, while Rebekah Harwell out of M.C. Perry High in Iwakuni, Japan (six rebounds), and Daiquari Raine of Poplarville High (eight rebounds) scored six each; Joy Grimsley of Petal High three, and Wisdom James of Durant High and Shaquita McGee of Yazoo City High, two each.

Lolecia Richardson out of Provine High in Jackson also hauled in six boards for Pearl River.

Ashley Williams and Whitney Williams paced BRCC with 15 points each, while Talaih Robertson scored seven, Charki’ra Fields five, Chelsea Christopher and Desiree’ Savage, four each; Catherine Moore three, and Jasmine Clark, Jamera Martin, Ke’ra St. John, Keisha Toston, and Kaylynn Walker, two a piece.

In the men’s game, Pearl River led 36-26 at the break, while Baton Rouge outscored the Wildcats 34-26 in the second half only to come up three points shy of victory.

Jeremy Hollimon of Gulfport High led the Wildcats with 12 points (six rebounds), while Frank Snow, a San Angelina JC (Tex.) transfer from Wellington, Fla. (10 rebounds) and Xavian Rimmer, an Alcorn State transfer who prepped at Piney Woods School near Jackson, 10 each; Kaven Bernard out of Assumption High in Napoleonville, La., five; DeAngelo Coleman out of South Pike High in Magnolia and Demondre Harvey of Minden (La.) High (eight rebounds), three each; and Devontai Foye of Hattiesburg High, Josh Carpenter of Oak Grove High, Rakeem Esco of Canton High, and Nick’Laus Warren out of Murrah High in Jackson, two a piece.

John Isaac paced the Bears with a game-high 24 points, while Fred Walker added 13, Keith Whitley seven, Elijah Pitts and Josh Washington, six each; and Levie Wright four.

Pearl River swept Baton Rouge in both schools’ season openers played Nov. 1 in Poplarville. The PRCC women were 56-51 winners, while its men won 64-62.

Pearl River returns to action when it hosts Hinds in both schools’ MACJC South Division openers Thursday in Shivers Gym with contests at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) before traveling to rival East Central for more division action Monday, Dec. 3, for 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men) contests.
